  • Risks of the Dyno?

These might seem like silly questions to some... But it can't hurt to ask before I break something...

An import tuner shop is opening up in Salem and as part of their Grand Opening they are having a BBQ, car show, Dyno contest at their shop. For $20 bucks you get food and 3 runs on their Dyno - I don't know prices of this stuff but I'm guessing normally it's quite a bit more than that? Anyway, I was wondering how risky a Dyno run is. The Racer Walsh bottom end virtually every other part under the hood has about 2500 miles on them and have taken some decent street use/abuse without problem - but how much more stress / risk is their on a Dyno? Also... Is there much risk of breaking a rear end / transmission? I still have the original 7.5 and probably quite a bit more power / torque than stock.

    Thanks for the advice
    I'm 21 and I've owned 3 SVO's... Yeah I like 'em.

as long as the operator is not a tool your car should be fine. You get to tell them when to stop. I would bet you beat the car harder on the street than you will on the dyno.

At this years reunion I got on the dyno with a car I had for 2 weeks. I had checked out the car pretty well before I bought it. In hind site although the turbo didn't have any side play and no play front to rear, it seemed stiff in rotation. Not gritty, just not easy to turn. I made 1 pull on the dyno and it was low, 150HP. But that was at 13lbs boost, the knock sensor plugged in, and plugs, wires, cap/rotor of unknown mileage. Not really too bad for 102K miles. A mile down the road the turbo committed hari kari. Either it was stressed on the dyno or Mitch broke it

If something is weak and out of spec, the dyno can help you find it. That price is very good. Put in some good gas change the fluids, do a tuneup and go have some fun.

My had 2 pulls on the dyno car show sat and then auto x sunday ,broke down on the way home 3hr drive turned into 12.00 but i dont blame the dyno .I blame MITCH for having to stay up late sat .

The car's more likely to detonate because it doesn't have 120 mph of air blowing on it, but it's generally safe. They should have a wideband, and detonation is a lot easier to hear in a garage with your hood open, so if there is a problem, they can stop. Sometimes you can find minor problems on the dyno that you didn't know you had.

if you run it on the street, and it don't break, you should be fine running it on the dyno.

Never in front or directly behind the car.
mike, in all the u-tube videos, where I've seen cars go crayz on dyno's (I've never seen one come off in person) they always go forward, I've never seen one go backwards...... Why not stand BEHIND the car ???

Let us just suppose the dyno rollers locked up, the car was putting serious power to the rear wheels, the front chain broke (or came loose), no wheelie bars on the back, and the car just became a fly-swatter, and smashed whoever was behind it?

physics on that don't match up just right. I'd be more worried about the drum coming loose than the car flipping backwards.

I have dynoed most of my mustangs and have never had a problem. For $20 bucks I will drive to Salem when is it I will try and bring chalky and my beater svo and his. doing it at Import shop is allways fun to see what kinda power the hondas are trying to make.I think the mustang dyno is a little better then the dyno meter but for $20 bucks who cares.

It was yesterday and again today until 6pm.

rlinemotorsports.com has the details and it's on craigslist.

Sadly I'm stuck in an engineering seminar all day - scheduled until 5, so I'm hoping it will end a bit early so I have time to make it. If not let me know how it goes
