  • No fuel pressure - new pump

I put a new Walbro pump in the other day and after getting everything in and adjusted car ran great seemed to even idle better than it had. Took a short drive to get gas and then a short couple of mile trip.

Today I was letting it sit in the garage to warm up and it just quit. I put a fuel gauge on it and it it showed no pressure. Did a KOEO test and there were no codes.

Any ideas before I drop the tank? Can I pull the pump and just hook it to a batter to test it?

Check your fuel pump relay under your seat first .

      How do you chek that?

Close as I could figure out was to ground the Green wire on the relay...is this correct?

sometimes you can just tap that relay, or just replace it...not expensive at all. I've had some that I just tapped and it started working again, others I just replaced all together.

I've had a couple instances where my new pumps wouldn't start on mine but key off / key on resolved it fortunately. Still not sure if it was the pump(s) or the relay.

You can measure the relay inputs and/or outputs to see if it's getting the signal and actually getting / switching voltage. Really easy to get too as well.

            Good luck.

When you turn the key on can you hear the pump prime itself? Is it quiet or does it wine loudly?

I listen for the pump but couldn't hear it. It is a pretty quiet pump so I may no hear it over the buzzers going off.

jumper out the connection in the pic (coutesy of Pat_in_LA)

turn the car to KOEO. go to the rear of the rear of the car and see if you can hear the pump running. Let's go from there.....

I tried this earlier on with the fuel line off and no fuel was coming out.

Does look like I need to drop the tank again. This time I will have to siphon out all the gas I put into it after I put the new pump in. Probably 12 gallons in it.

I'm guessing that something came loose. I had to splice in two wires to the connector that was supplied with the pump. I used the supplied hardware to do this and I'm no regretting not soldering them.

Going to mess with the relay first to make sure that is working. Then drop the tank if necessary.

Fuel level was working. All wires were reconnected and the pump worked for a little bit.

Can I test the pump by connecting it straight to the battery? Does it need to be immersed in gas?

                      Thanks for all the help.

Where did you get your pump. Was it from a reputable supplier? There are some fake Walbros out there from China that are of questionable quality. I also see that Walbros does not come with a warranty any more, so you may be minus a few bucks anyway if it is the pump.

Be VERY careful with both of these proceedures !! (Have a scar on my leg now)

Siphon with hand or suction pumps -NOT remote electric fuel pump (that can spark) near the tank

Test in well ventilated area -connect (Longer the better) leads to pump,
then battery AWAY from gas fumes.

                            Mark
P.S. Have a fire extingisher close -just incase. When fires happen the running around, panic -"use of other agents" are often what get you in more trouble !

I sort of checked out the fuel relay. 11.8v to two of the terminals, grounded the tan one w/ key on and nothing, is this correct with the relay unplugged?
