  • Camshaft removal

OK, I put in the A237 years ago and I've forgotten how to remove it. I've found nothing in the shop manuals. Everything is off pre-Boport 1.9 but how do I slide the old camshaft out? Memory is the second thing to go! I think.

There is a keeper plate on the back bearing tower facing the firewall with two phillip screws holding it in place. Once removed, pull the camshaft out the front. You may have to jack up the engine to get it past the radiator. Alternatively, you could remove the bolts holding the tranny cross mount and allow the engine to pivot on the motor mounts.

I see them now! Now how in the heck did I get them out before? Looks like a double flex-u-joint-phillips(#3) will be needed. Thanks!

Doen't forget to put a rag in the head so they don't fall down the oil return hole directly below the screw!

OK, A237 is out and Boport 1.9 is in. At least it is in the head. I still have to replace the back plate, do the springs, install the lifters and the roller followers and put it all back together. Oh yeah, the Forced4 CAI kit came yesterday so that's also something to do but the car feels more powerful already. ;^)

OK, I'm thinking about tires, too. I just hate to get rid of the Gatorbacks, they've been such good tires since 1989.

                  1989?

I have as set of those that have cracks so wide that you can plant a nickel in them and they will stick.

How much of a difference is there between the Bo-Port 1.5 and the 1.9? or is Esslinger the better way to go?

The 1.9 is the last step in performance for a daily driver. Going to 2.0 and up requires some head work. I'll let you know the difference 'tween A237 and Boport 1.9 in a few days. Pat, my tires have been "in the house" for 21 years so there are no cracks. A little hard, yes, but no cracks. (No freeway driving either.)
