leave it at 10psi for now then.

you've stated before that you set base timing to 10, and when you plug the spout back in, it only goes up to 24. shop manual states tolerance is 30 deg +- 3 deg. (*during self test, pretty sure normal strategy as well, could someone _please_ validate this on a stock setup?) is still the case with the new TFI installed?

not to jump to conclusions, but, since this started after a timing/idle reset, i would take a close look a the TFI pigtail and see if there are any bad wires around there that might have been disturbed when the timing was reset. they can be sneaky.

Ill have to recheck the timing with the spout connected...

Its running pretty good now, no hesitation at higher RPM like before. It has a miss at idle though.

Yep the TFI pigtail had some bad wiring, i taped everything up the best i could..

alright, now we're getting somewhere! that area of the engine can get pretty hot, IME tape lasts a few months tops. how far did you go up the harness? last time this happened on my stock harness, i 'fixed' (ha! ask dave about that one) the area near the TFI, but later found additional damage almost a foot back into the harness bundle. forced 4 has a new pigtail for $40 or you can source one from a JY on any of the TFI/DIS cars.

next stop on the WTFTrain: figure out why the fuel pressure is tailing off above 10psi boost.

phil's problems are now my (wife's) problems. main suspect is low fuel pressure. new priority, replace the leaky gas tank fill tube grommet/gasket and get a proper exhaust put on it. then we get to place splice the TFI connector (deja vue), as thats another variable to eliminate in the troubleshooting process. after that, up on jackstands to swap wheels/tires and while its up in the air, do a through inspection of the rail fuel pump. something is loose down in that area causing both the fuel gauge and fuel pump to sporadically conk out.

its definitely strange having an interior in an SVO; used to hearing EVERYTHING that was going on with the car, now everything is all dull and distant like...

replaced fuel filler grommet, installed exhaust. TPS was sitting at .5v at closed throttle, reset to .95v, and it seems to drive fine. still yanking timing up top, but i dumped a quarter quart of oil out of the intake, so that's not unexpected. fuel pressure is slow to pump up, so something aint quite right in the back still. 255 in tank on the winter project list. next up it gets the intake ripped off and cleaned out, an upgraded PCV valve, and a catch can from the valve cover vent added.

scratch the winter project list, the 255 is going in NOW. dropped the tank, yanked the pump, the sock was completely encased in some sort of rust/mud nastiness, and there was signs of said compound getting sucked into the pump. might have been contributing slightly to the fuel pressure problem. cleaned the tank, dumped out a silly amount of rust, but the inside of the tank looks fine. also, found a LARGE ZIP TIE sitting in the tank; not sure what it was supposed to be on, or how it got in there.... i like me some zip ties, but this is just silly. return line fitting was cracked and barely holding on, surprised it actually stayed together. fuel level sender wire was broken, replaced and re-soldered. deleting rail pump, replacing all filters, deleting damper and removing the rubber fuel line that was spliced in. hope to get it all back together today and we'll see how it runs.

unfortunately not this year. its outside AAA range, i've burned through my vacation time for the year, and jayme is right smack dab in the middle of an accelerated masters program. next year for sure though.

You make me sad. No barefoot Alex in the parking lot this year.

Now go back and re-adjust that TPS to .5 and re-clog the fuel sock. You have an entire year to figure it out!

well that was a bloody waste of 2 hours. replaced pump, filters, yadda yadda yadda, and then promptly blew the fuel line off the outlet of the fuel filter on key on with 0 psi on the test port valve. guess there's something stuck in there somewhere and i just replaced all that junk for nothing. live and learn.

returned from vacation and putzed around with it some more. apperntly i replaced the aux pump with a filter, but didnt actually replace the orignal filter. im half tempted to cut it apart to see how bad it was, but when i inverted the filter to dump the remaining gas out, it came out as sludge. runs much better WOT and PT, but now it has a bit of hesitation going from PT -> WOT. think it has something to do with the recurring puddle of oil in the intake. followed jayme into town when she took it in to get a front end alignment and tie rod replacement, ever time she'd lean on it, id get fumigated with the sticky sweet smell of burnt oil from the tail pipe.

guess i'm ordering 2 catch cans from summit and putting a proper crank evac system on both the 84s this week. also, likely going to try putting the aux pump back on, that 255lph in tank is LOUD, you could hear it buzzing away from 5 car lengths! not nearly as loud as the 255lph + aux setup on the 2a. might end up flushing both the pumps i pulled and putting em back in if i can get this thing to quiet down any more. might also have to rip out the entire fuel line system; counted no less then 5 (five!!!) splices in the high pressure side from tank to rail. :shakeyfist:

but for now, this case is closed.
