  • TPS testing

    I know this topic has been brought up and I have research them but I still have a question regarding testing the TPS. I know I need to check for voltage hooking up to the green and black wires with the key on. how do you hook connect the multimeter leads? I suspect you need to just poke into the wires while the plug is connected?
    Im asking as my idle is fine when cold, as soon as it warms up, it just drops and dies. so Im starting with the IAC and TPS first.

    yes, you just poke the wires, OR, if you search here, you'll see some people have taken old harnesses and made a probe harness.

    IF your car is dying when warm, I highly suspect the TPS is fine. You need to run through the base idle procedure in the FAQ section.
    Adjusting the TPS, without adjusting the other settings will likely only make things worse.

      Also look into the temp sensor for the computer. My 85 when it gets under 45-50 it will not idle for anything when cold. The sensor is out of range. I did the base idle setup when I first got it whilst I did a bunch of cleanup etc.. First fall I had it and it got that chilly is when it showed up. Yours may be just the opposite, once warmed up it goes out. I have the procedure to ohm it out around somewhere. If we had an ACT I'd say check that, but we don't. My 92 LX ran like crap when it warmed up, pulled the ACT and it was coated with oil, eventhough it ohmed out fine at cold and hot.

          Warm non-running issues tend to point to the ignition system (TFI/PIP).
          When the TPS goes bad or intermittent, the car will default to high idle.

            Thanks guys, I tested the TPS and it checked out good so I do have an extra ACT sensor that I might try. yea Eric, my idles just find cold at high idle and just falls as it warms up.

              We don't have one (unless you've done some mods). There is a coolant sensor on lower intake for the ECU. That was/is my problem on the 85, like I said yours could be failing just the opposite.

                The ECT sensor in the top-center of the lower intake is pretty well known for giving some very interesting idle/warm running issues. I have had mine fail a couple of times and it was different symptoms each failure. One was 3000+rpm idle once warm, the other time it was dying once warm, so likely opposite failure modes (i.e.- short vs open failure), which would make the EEC think it was either -40 deg F or >250 deg F. Fun stuff...

                  Exactly! My other 85, from AZ was the one I was referring to.
