I remember seeing something about mass air for svo. I think it was in one of the tiny avenger articles. Has anyone tried or heard anything about these kits?

I personally have never tried one. But most of the guys that I have talked to that have ponied up the $500 for it, have been very disapointed..
I think the consensus has been spend the money on a real eec tuner if you are going to do that..Eric C

Don't take this the wrong way, but the best advice I can give you is this.... stop trying to apply the 5.0 aftermarket world to your 2.3liter turbo.
Seems so many people are wanting to 'bolt on' parts to their 4-pot and wanting THAT to it make them go faster....
Bolting parts will make your car faster, but not in the way it applies to a 5.0 motor...
What kind of modifications (motorwise) do you have now? Maybe everyone here can give you some recommendations on which parts you should put on your wish list.

mods thus far
Bud
I have an 84 svo and an 84 turbo gt. I have very large plans for the gt, it is apart now. The svo is my driver. So far I have only added 35# injectors, fms clutch, homeade cold air,,ported upper and lower intake (84 style), ets boost control set to approx. 17#(by the factory gauge) and 3 inch exhaust front to back. The motor is from an 87 tc I bought. The factory motor is on a stand awaiting my attention. I dont plan on doing a lot to the svo but would like to make a few strategic power enhancements.I had a head ported w/ big valves and a factory cam for an 85.5 svo which I was going to use on the gt now I am leaning toward using that on the svo and buying an aluminum head for the gt....What are your thoughts? I was also wondering whether or not to have the svo camshaft balanced. The 2.3 is such a BUZZY motor I am wondering if that will cure some of that??The machine shop said they would balance it for $180. This is my first attempt at rebuilding a turbo4 and only my second rebuild period. Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Paul,
Your best bet is to create a new thread under the engine catergory asking for everyone's thoughts and ideas.
But, you first have to ask yourself, "what do you want from the car/motor?" Are you looking for increased HP? How much? Are you looking for a streetable amount? How much is streetable to you? Is this going to be a drag racing car, a cruiser, or an open track/autox car? etc etc etc....and don't forget, many times this factor holds true...increase HP=spend money.
Answering some of your questions....from my personal point of view..
I've never heard of someone 'balancing' a 2.3 liter camshaft - nor do I understand why you think it's beneficial for the motor. From what I gather the "buzzy' nature of a 2.3 bothers you......and nothing else. Again - it's not a 5.0 or V12.
The Alum head sounds great - but I will be waiting for others to 'field test' that new product first.
You're using 35# injectors? With what computer? You'll need to use a computer that is calibrated for the 35s. Your 84 computer is NOT compatible. Runs like crap if you just drop 35 pounders in the motor. Unless you piggyback an aftermarket tuner.
Serious HP is usually achieved using a EEC tuner or aftermarket EEC setup (ie: SDS, MoTec, Holley)
Ya might think about using later style (ported) intakes - more CFM flow.
Use a ported E6 manifold or custom built header (NOT ATR).
Fuel System upgrade is VERY necessary. You'll need a larger fuel pump and FPR to go with it.
Front Mount Intercooler.
Look into a T03/04 hybrid for a start...
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply Bud.
I know, I know this is going back to v-8 tech but, crank balancing is a common practice for race cars. Balancing the cranckshaft gets rid of harmonic distortion which frees up horsepower and increases bearing life and not that it really bothers me but I would like the revs to be just a tad smoother.
Esslinger has been making an aluminum head for quite some time, do you know of anyone else who offers them? Esslinger is very expensive..
Have an 87tc intake to port....
Forgot to tell you I have a ported e6 manifold which I ported one night after the atr I was running cracked.
going to put the larger fuel system in with fresh motor.
I am also in the process of fabricating an intercooler. I use to work for Modine and still have freinds there to get stuff fabbed up for me. Just need to get them my dimensions.
Since we are in the same neck of the woods, do you know of a good machine shop who works on these motors in the area ?
I would like to have someone doublecheck the set-up on my head but dont trust any of the knoxville shops.Duhhh!!!! Why dont ya put a 5.0 in that car George???

oops!!
dooohhh!!! sorry guys, minor brain fart there. I did mean crank.
So you think it is a good idea ? Does it make the motor noticeably smoother? If I were to balace the whole assembly that would add a significant amount to my rebuild. But, I would be willing to do so if the consensus says to.
I was thinking of balancing crank only.
All people who have rebuilt one of these please feel free to chime in with machining recommendations.
Bear in mind this motor is for my driver which I expect to never go over 300hp.Last edited by pegasus.v.o; 05-28-2002, 10:53 AM.Duhhh!!!! Why dont ya put a 5.0 in that car George???

I balanced mine when I rebuilt it.
I dont think I paid but about $75 for my balance job tho.
It included crank, rods pistons, and flywheel.
When my engine sits at idle, you can't tell it is running, because it runs so smoothEric C

balancing your crank...ahh....nah, I've never done it - except to my 347ci. But, then again - I don't plan on running a 300+ hp 2.3 motor either. Just an idea - but if you're motor is shakin on you more than you think it should...maybe you should check the engine dampeners. I do run an Alum Flywheel - I really liked what it did for my motor...you might look into that as well. SVPU offers them.... www.svpu.com
sorry - I don't know of any good machine shops in Knoxville. Maybe you should ask SVO Mach (Greg) here on the board. he's in Knoxville as well.
Esslinger has an Alum STREET head due to come out this summer. Thought that was what you're were asking about. Otherwise - if you're thinking about their current head....for-get-a-bout-it. Damn thing seems to be more of an aggrivation in relation to cost....thus, why they're developing a street application. Again tho...I'll wait for others with money to spare on field testing that one first.

The place that did all my machine work is medlock racing, in Richmond KY.
he did my head, my block, and balance.
He builds 4-cyl 2.3 fords for the local dirt track racers, and he pretty much cleans up.
Seems like a heck of a drive (2 trips) to find a machine shop.Eric C
