  • No spark from coil

I have replaced all of the bad connectors in my wiring harness, Then trested them back to the ecu pins. So I am fairly confident that I have them right.

    Replaced, cap, rotor, plugs.

Try to start, and the engine turns over but nothing.

Check for spark at the coil, and NONE.

Go through the TFI -IV troubleshooting, and everything checks out until I get to the Stator test, page 15-59, this is where my troubles begin, I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!

It says, "remove coil wire and ground", which wire? Coil to distributor? Or teh ignition coil connector?

Then it says to disconnect the "pin-in-line connector" and attach the the (+) VOM lead to the TFI Module side of the connector? What do they want me to connect to? The six pins, one at a time?

Please help, my goal was to get the old girl running over this long weekend.

It would appear that the way I am headed, it is either the stator, or the TFI.

    Thanks.

First thing you want to do is check for voltage at the coil connector with the key on engine off position. If you don't have it there it may be your ignition switch.

You can remove the TFI module and take it to Advance or Autozone and they can test it for you for free. If the TFI test ok, then it is in your wires or the PIP or both. Although I have never heard of a PIP keeping a car from starting.

Can you remove the TFI while the distributor is in the car? Or do I have to remove the distributor like the manual says?

You can remove it on the car. You will need a special tool or ground down socket to get at the bolts. It is a $7 item at AZ.

            The TFI was bad...

Replaced it, now I have spark, the motor tries to strat when cranking, and then dies as soon as I let the key go to run.

Ran codes, and the only one I get is 67 - AC or clutch??

When it tries to fire a bunch of rust and black chunks flew out the exhaust, after sitting for 6 years could the exhaust be plugged?

How do I checck to ensure the injectors are firing? I tried to leave the key in run, and turn the engine over by had to hear them fire, I heard nothing.

How do I measure the fuel pressure?

I have spark, at the plug.

            Any help would be appreciated.

I bought a noid light and it flashed when I turned the motor over.

Tomorrow I will buy a fuel pressure gauge and see if I have the required fuel pressure.

I just don't know, do injectors go bad after sitting?

                ........

...if its trying to start; then the injectors are firing....double check that timing/rotor position with crank at TDC & cam 'gunsited' at the auxilary....

You didn't indicate whether or not you replaced the plug wires. You might want to do that as well. Get a set of Motorcraft or autolites.

Have you checked the timing? Pull the spout and have someone crank it over to make sure you are at 10* BTDC.

Also, the intercooler has to be in place for it to run.

The injectors could get gummed up so once you get it running, I would put some injector cleaner through it. Have you replaced the 6 year old gas in the tank? You might start there.

The exhaust is probably not clogged unless a rat made a nest in it. If you think that is a possibilty, you can loosen and drop down the exhaust after the cat.

I have replaced plugs, wires, cap, and rotor.

                    Have the intercooler in place.

I have not drained the tank. I will do that this evening, and run some injector cleaner through.

I have some unknown pressure at the schrader valve.

I am getting close, its just being a bit cantankerous.

                      Have the intercooler in place.
So -- you do have all the hoses hooked up and tight, right ?

the intercooler hoses need to be on, the VAM to turbo hose needs to be on and they all need to have clamps on them.

These engines won't run with the hoses disconnected.

Yep. They are all plumbed up.

                        I will check them again.

The boost control vacuum hoses look like poo!!

I was going to replace all vacuum hoses as soon as I get it running.

Maybe the VAM hoses or intercooler hoses have a kink, and leak.

I hopefully will have more time tonight after work to go over everything slowly, and methodically.

I just don't understand why I can't hear the injectors firing, with the key on and turning it over by hand...

                        Thanks.

                          Sat for 7 years!!

Well I wish you had posted that earlier in the thread!!

You have replace alot of parts (which you should have)

You need to drain the tank (compleatly) and fill with fresh gas!

Also, since the car likely had modern gas (with 10% oxiginated addititive) you should replace the fuel filter! The additives are hard on the filter material (brakes down) and can lead to pluging.

I wouldn't be suprised that by the time you read this you have it running. (It sounds like you are close)
                          Mark

P.S. It would have been good to "oil up" the cylinders (from sitting) with 556 or similar oil to free the rings! If it turn freely all along you should be ok-I hope you didn't have to force it or scratch the cylinders from any rust inside! LA is quite wet!
