But would the method of jumping the fan controller wires with a switch work if the fan controller itself is fried. My guess is that it would because it seems the controller is actually being bypassed.

This seems the easiest way to do it. The reason behind me installing a switch is that the fan no worky at all, so something is fried, whether it be the controller or the relay and I'm looking for a cheap and easy fix, the convenience of having a switch is a bonus.

My schematic assumes that the fan controller still works, but it could be adapted to a non-functioning fan controller by using the temperature sensor switch in the manifold along with a manual switch to latch the underhood relay. If you look at the schematic of the factory setup you'll see how this is possible.

        Fan Switch

SVOeric made reference in this post to buying an aftermarket fan controller from SVPU. Can anyone tell me how to get in touch with them, I have sent emails in the past for other items Sent them one this morning about this post looking for a fan controller, as I have the same problem but I never hear back from them. I have called them, and get a nice answering machine message, but then I get a message that says they are not taking messages at this time. I am interested in buying a couple items from them, but I don't wanna have to drive all the way from the DFW TX area to AL to talk with them or place an order.

I have my Contour fan, headlights and driving lights controlled by external relays, works way better. It looks like it would be easy to use a couple of small Bosch relays in place of the controller. If someone local has a burned up controller I use I might be able to design something that did not require cutting any wires.

Has anyone just wired the fan without a switch so it is always on. Im thinking for a SVO that is rarely driven this could be my option since it would not put to much use on the fan motor ( and I have 2 extras)and I dont run the risk of forgeting to turn the switch on.

Has anyone tried this and what do you think.

Well I guess there two different problems here. People with burned up controllers and people that want to save their working controllers, I fell in the latter so I put a relay out by the fan.

In the case of modding the controller I guess I depends on where it fails. If the harness side plug melts then it would not be a big deal to cut the plug off and wire two relays in. If the controller is bad I was thinking about gutting the controller and installing new relays so the harness could be reused. Along with a relay out by the fan. Another idea is putting spade connectors on two relays and plugging then into the harness.

This would be a very bad idea unless you are intending to burn your SVO. At the very least, you need a fuse in every electrical circuit to protect against a short.

If it is a rarely driven SVO, then you probably don't have a problem. Get the fan kit from SVPU or Motion Dynamic and have the best of both worlds. One that works safely and keeps the car cool.

I agree much with GaBoy on this --

BTW : The SVPU kit has a place to hook a switch to, so you can kick it on and off, AND it works off the adjustable thermostat.

Someone suggested in another post to email them and that in the subject put something along the lines of "part needed ASAP, have $$$$$$$$"

Typically the fan draws about 20A and even more at startup (of the fan). I can draw you up a quick schematic if you'd like.
Ok, I used AT6's schematic and wired up the fan, no problem. I actually found a kit that was designed for installing aftermarket lights, I modified it slightly to work for the fan. The only difference from the schematic is that I used a 30A relay that came with the kit, I hope this works in the long term, seems to be working OK now. Thanks for all of the help. Now I won't have to worry about heating up in traffic.

30A relay sounds good to me. I run a 30A relay to power both my turbocoupe fans and those draw tons of current.

                          30amps?

I'm actually using 2 30amp relays (one for each fan) since I twice blew up 30amp-rated aftermarket controllers when I had it controlling both of my TC fans.

I now use a manual switch controlling 2 30amp relays which then go to the fans.

So my point is, I don't think one 30amp unit is enough for TC fans. But whatever works for you.

Hmm sounds like a good idea Jav. LOL, do you use a relay to power up the other 2 relays becuz we all know it takes alot of amps to power up 2 relay coils in parallel? J/K

I guess i don't really have my fans on that often. I mostly use the SVO for work (50miles round) highway and i also have a 3 row bronze radiator with my newest toy Essy billet alum. water pump so its not very often it gets too warm. Good idea tho for those amperage hungry fans.

Then I would need a relay for that relay!

Anyway, I have the stock radiator and the essy water pump.

However, I don't use the SVO for my 50-mile roundtrip commute to work. I've run it on road-course and the radiator is just not enough, so my fans were on what seems constantly. While all the other cars were running every other session, my g/f and I were trading off and the car was constantly running, which was hard on it. By late afternoon, the fans were done and I shoved it back on to the trailer. And that was on a cold, foggy December day!

I plan (have been "planning" forever!) on putting a new radiator and FMIC but for a quick auto-x in a week, I just got the fans working.

Yeah i just recently aquired a Volvo FMIC with some misc. hoses/pipes. Now im just waiting to maybe op for a aluminum ranger radiator or something aluminum that will let me run the FMIC and some nice piping too.

I gotta get some new KONIs man, my stock gabriel strut cartridge replacements SUCK!!! Its as if my struts were still blown. I won't dare race it in this condition especially with the tires rubbing the fenders.
