ok , but on to my question how does plugs make the car ping?
The pinging is detonation. More precisely, it is pre-detonation meaning that the air fuel mixture it detonating before it is supposed to in the 4 stroke cycle. This can be caused by several things, but plugs can also cause it too. If your plugs are not the correct heat range, then the heat from the head transfer to the plug and you end up with a glow plug igniting the leftover air/fuel mixture leftover from the last combustion cycle, thus the pinging.

You can get a set of autolites at Wally World. The reddish color on your plugs are from the additive and is not sign of a problem.

Well gents i'll take the advise of the all knowing. lord knows you all have more experience than I on this car.

Question should i go with a colder heat range or are the stock plugs good enough?

Thanks for the explainations. I know quite a bit, still learning, but for now i'll stick to what i really know. This bad boy Mini Gun Nothing better than 4000 rounds per min hammering the next 3rd world country we try to enter.

Well for now i'll have to end my discussion on the problem since i'll be out of town for a couple of weeks. when i get back though, I'll change the plugs, install the WBO2 and let ya'll know my findings. From their i'll diagnose more indepth more issues. thanks for all the feedback and info.

A turbo plug IS a colder heat range plug than a NA motor. Just make sure you get the one specified for this engine, and gap it .032" to .036"

Mike you know your ,"Stuff" quite well! Not too many hit on the redish tint on the plugs. I got that one years ago at a Ford school! Excellent Grasshopper! The plugs can look good but after a time they loose their "Power", especially under 12:1 compression!

                  UPDATE

ok got the WIDEBAND installed and well its rock solid through the gears at 10.9- 11.4 . it still pings in 4th. pulls like a raped ape when its cool outside. Pings too much when its warmer for me to get dumb with it.

So now i'll change the plugs and check compression to see where its at. i'll update again later.

I'M ALREADY RUNNING 93 OCTANE. It doesn't get better than that unless i want race fuel.
octane still doesn't answer why everyone else can run 15 psi or more and not have det. Why is my car soooooo lucky?

I've read through this and maybe I missed it but how many miles are on the engine? Could excessive carbon build up on the piston face be causing or contributing to the pinging or detonation? Try running a few cans of the black 104 through it maybe? A good injector cleaning probably wouldn't hurt it either. How about a good road trip, several hours worth. Just a few random thoughts...

I pretty much have to run 93, and a can of 104+, or I get detonation

I can OCASIONALLY find a good tank that won't detonate without the 104, but it's pretty rare now-a-days

Fuel can vary a lot from station to station, and tank to tank

Ok car fans, i did some checking around.
First off i changed the plugs from NGK to MOTO's. i don't think it helped i still get pinging.

Now i did notice after some more driving that in 4th and 5th that if you floor it the WBO2 would jump down to 10.6-11.4 but then slowly rise as the rpm's go up to about 12.5 . Problem is it starts to ping just before it raises up the A/F. running alittle on the lean side maybe?

Maybe i need to clean injectors.

i did a compression test just to see. Engine warm, throttle body open, all plugs out. i got

                          160 #4

I checked cyl 1 quit a few times to verify. it was rock solid at 150.

Oh and to answer the question about mileage, well its got about 11,000 on the rebuilt engine. I didn't do the work the previous owner did it.

I guess its time to add some toulene to the gas....... is that the stuff?

thanks everybody for the help. i will say this is the best the car has for me. now i just have to install the FMIC and have fun.

The best thing that I can say about any local pump gas lately, is just don't trust it. Last year when I went back East and down South for the Reunion, the 89 Octace was better than the 92 out here. Now things are different. The Hurricanes have brought the supply chain into play, and I believe that any underground storage has taken precedence over which reservoir it gets pumped into. In other words, expect the lowest octane despite what you paid.

Just my 2 cents, but I have done (2) 84 to 85.5 -86 conversions with a PE and brown tops, and both cars pinged like crap. All the looking in the world at fuel is not going to solve your problem. Take a good look at what the timing is doing with the PE under boost, there you will find your answer. You should leave the Knock sensor connected till you figure it out...safer to feel timming leaving then to hear pinging.
