  • PICS!!!!!!!!!! found out why i had a detonation problem

well i got the head off today and well so far, not to good. the head is fine, it does have a leaking valve guide, easy fix but check out these pics.

i talk to the previous owner and since he paid someone to do the engine work, he never knew what was installed in the engine. he's going to see if the engine builder will do something about the pistons. supposedly there was a 12 month/12000 mile warranty, but who knows.

Looks like to me that you have a flat top piston with valve releifs rather than the lower CR turbo piston which is supposed to have a dish. That is a big NO-NO!.

So heres my dimlema? do i just suck it up run lower boost and keeps the pistons in there?(i think not)

Buy another short block and have it done correctly?
or pull this engine and have it done right. supposedly this engine has a .030 over bore on it. i'll get it measured and see for sure tomorrow.

Man it sucks. I hate the fact that i don't have my own place to pull the engine and get it fixed. i can probably borrow an engine stand and a hoist, then take it to a machine shop to check it out.

if i'm going to build it right should i go for stock internals or beef it up, I'm looking for 300 hp at the wheels, i want to keep the enigne somewhat reliable.

                    Any suggestions?

Looks like you got a A-237 roller cam in the head.

Yea i got screwed, but so did the previous owner. right now hes trying to see if the machine shop that did the work will get him the correct pistons so he can give them to me. the P.O. is a good guy and hated to hear about the shotty work that was done to the car. especially since he paid GOOD money to get it fixed right.

He did say that he thought something was up because after all the upgrades he did, the car felt the same but at lower boost. he never did get a chance to turn up the boost, and frankly i think he was leary of the engine build. he knew something was up.

You mentioned a warranty. If they screwed up and installed flat tops with reliefs, they screwed up. Hopefully the cylinder walls will clean up where thay are now, but you need to run all this over with the rebuilder before you proceed any further. No rebuilder is likely to warranty it if they see all the aftermarket parts or hear about 20PSI boost..
