      Hi Guys,

Dropped the gas tank today. Followed Eric's steps (with NavySVO and Boostedbruisers input too!) and it was pretty easy. Took me about 2 hours, but hey, I'm a rookie. Anyway, I thought the 86 has one fuel pump?!? My 86 appears to have 2 in the tank. Am I missing something here? I got one out (from the passenger side of the tank) and it appears to have been changed at sometime since it says Walbro on it. The one on the lower side (driver) looks like someone tried to pop it out at one time, but broke all the metal tabs off with a punch. So here are my questions....

      1. Does an 86 have 1 or 2 pumps in the tank?
      2. How do I remove a fuel pump when the tabs are gone?

Appreciate the help in advance. Fleming, don't hate on me and maybe I will pick up your dinner next reunion! Hope everyone had a great Christmas too!

The other one is your fuel gauge sending unit. If someone hosed the ring and you really want to pull it - Soak it with Pb or Wd and try again. You may need to resort to using a BFS instead of the brass punch (too soft) to get down into the notches. If so do it in a well ventilated area and use a fan if necessary! If you're not overly concerned and your gauge works, keep truckin'! Walbro is o.e. equipment for alot of stuff. Someone has obviously been in there sometime in your cars' life... Dunno what your current pump is. It might say on it... What I've done in the past is taken a yellow (ala junkyark) paint marker and written next to the hole what went in and the date. Then take the box top and write LPH and date and put it somewhere for safekeeping(glovebox, file cabinet, etc.) HTH

Thanks Erics SVO, that WAS very helpful!
My gauge is fine, doesn't appear to be leaking around it, so I'm O.K. I have a log book that I put everything in when I work on the car, so I guess the board has talked me into a Walbro 255lph FP. I am taking the tank Monday to have it cleaned professionally, then Paul (Gyrhead) will be sending me a FP as soon as I call him! 1/2 done, stay tuned, may need help putting everything back together! Later taters.....

            Dreamin,

Take pics while you are at it. That way, if something does look out of place, you find it now. Besides, it's free advice........it don't get no better than free!

              Navy,

The only way free advice gets any better, is to get it BEFORE I do it! I'm pickin' the tank up today from it's cleaning. But the important thing is, I'll know next time! BTW, did you see my ViQueens put a hurtin' on your Bears? I know, the starters were out, but hey, at least you kept your coach after the game! Later tater.....

I assume you mean the Fuel pump bracket? Go to the local pick a part and get a bracket from anything 87 and newer up to 93.
That will set you up for a bigger fuel pump.

As far as the fuel gauge sending unit, do you order them anywhere specific, or will any parts store do? Mine is way rusty and since I have it out, may as well replace. BTW, Paul (Gyrhead) hooked me up on a 255 fuel pump. I saw he also had a great deal on injectors if anyone is needing them. Tell him I sent you and he'll give you an addition 0% off! Thanks Paul, hope to see you again at the reunion....

                          Thanks Navy,
and the exact link I need to boot! Next thing I know, you'll want to install it for me! Thanks again, and I'll post my results as soon as the "weekend AFTER payday" gets here!

                            Finally, I think...

                            Evenin' Fellers,
Got my 255lph fuel pump (thanks Paul) all put together and inside the tank today. I know, I know, it's about time (I had some transmission expenses on my 94 Jeep GCL that hurt the ol' budget). Checked to make sure it was working before I bolted everything back up (thanks boostedbruiser, my clip was shipped broken also, but it still hooked up) Got everything put together in reverse order (thanks SvoEric) and checked for any pinches or binds. And now my question is..........other than put gas in it (before Fleming slams me) is there anything else to do before I fire her up? Thanks again everyone for all the help......

Took 'er out for a spin and I guess I did NEED a fuel pump! No hesitation what so ever when I punch it, and LOTS of people got passed while downshifting to 4th, when even with them, shifting into 5th. Sweet. Just put a few gallons in to see how she runs. Tomorrow is the big test, FILLING HER UP! Hopefully, no leaks......None so far. Thanks to all who helped. Even Fleming!
