  • Jasper engines?

Well unfortunately the auxilary gear is now stripped and killed another distributor gear when the mechanic was testing it. So, what they want to do is get a whole new engine from jasper to put in it. Of course I don't necessarily need to go that far, but I'm tired of not knowing what has been done so I'd like to have a crisp new build up done anyway. So, I just wanted to check in and see if anyone has any experience with this or advice for or against this decision.

I'm dishing out a lot more money than expected but at least this way I can start fresh. Also, if anyone wants to put it in for me I have a nice shiny new dime for you

Just make sure that forged pistons are specified and guaranteed as part of the rebuild. If you see or hear anyone using the word "hypereutectic", that is a red flag that means that you got cast pistons.

The local Ford dealership here uses Fred Jones rebuilt engines. Short block or long block. Or you could check Racer Walsh, or you do it yourself.

Well the very first word in the product description is "hypereutectic". If that's a problem should I consider looking elsewhere?

Here's the engine description from the Jasper website, part number 147810:
Updates:HYPEREUTECTIC PISTONS:Highly resistent to scuffing and wear.
GRAPHITE HEAD GASKETS:Pliable material that does not tear when casting
expand and contract. Graphite gaskets transfer heat evenly and will
not deteriorate around water passages like Kevlar gaskets do.
MOLY PISTON RING:Higher durability, reduce cyl. wall wear.
CHROME PLATED VALVE STEMS:Have better oil retention, improved
resistance to galling and greater overall durability than conventional
        valve stem

        Notes:
Product summary: Tin Oil Pan, Turbocharged, One Piece Pan Gasket, Flat Cap
        Block casting: E3ZE-DC
Block casting location: PASSENGER SIDE-FRONT ALONG SURFACE
        Crank casting: E2ZE-BA 2D
Crank casting location: BETWEEN #1 MAIN & #1 ROD JOURNALS
        Head casting: E6ZE-AB
        Head casting location: UN.VAL-COV,IN SPK-P HOLE,OR EXH.PORT
SPECIFY--1 OR 2 PIECE REAR SEAL
        C/SHAFTS W/1 PIECE SEALS USE 24116
        C/SHAFTS W/2 PIECE SEALS USE 24122
        SPECIFY--W/OR W/O OIL SENSOR
EXTRA BOLT HOLE ON INTAKE SIDE
        HAS 1 PIECE PAN GASKET

If there's anything that doesn't seem right please do let me know.

You do NOT want the hyper pistons. They are stronger than cast but fall far short of forged and won't stand up to boosted applications. Any real detonation will destroy them.

Move on after seeing "Hypereutectic". If they can't provide the correct parts, look elsewhere.

Check out Racer Wlash or Motion Dynamics. The can get you the right bottom end the first time or you can have it rebuilt locally. Mr. Pink is in your area and I'm sure he knows of a good machine shop. You might give Paul a call at SVPU as he used to have a shop in your area and can point you to a reputable shop.

Thanks for the advice. Since the jasper engine doesn't seem to be worth it I'll see what I can do to find a machine shop around here. I have more time than money so I'd rather wait a little longer to get it done right than cheap out on soemthing that will fall apart.

They're not stronger, they're harder. Toughness and hardness are very different.

Shipping engines around is not cheap. We would be delighted to put a good one together for you, but see what your local shops have to say. Be happy to provide advice (free) or be your parts source(not free).

Well my dad has already agreed to get the jasper engine before I could explain the situation, so in about two weeks I'll either have good or bad news.

From what I've read over at Turboford the hyper pistons are good enough for keeping everything stock, but risk total destruction at the first sign of any real detonation. It has a three year warranty, so if it doesn't kill me after the first two years I'll tear it apart and drop in some performance parts and machine the daylights out of that thing. This isn't quite the way I wanted to go, but it's a bit too late now. I guess I'll have to be a guinea pig for finding out the truth about these engines. Keep your fingers crossed.

i would suspect that jasper doesnt know its going into a turbo application. before you accept it ,install it,start it, be sure they do and make sure they are going to warranty it or be prepared to eat it.

I seconded what Chris said in my PM to you. I'd call and talk to Jasper and they may have a turbo app engine with the proper pistons. Don't rely on the shop/mechanic to get you the correct engine. Make some calls yourself.
