  • Where to buy a rebuild kit???

I am going to do a rebuild on my 84. Where do you guys recommend for parts? Does someone sell a kit or am I stuck piecing it together? I am looking for good quality at a fair price. I have tried looking online, but am not coming up with much. Any help would be much appreciated. Also, if there is anything I should do "while I'm in there", the engine that is, what would you guys suggest?

what do you want to do with the motor? Main studs, head studs, upgrade the con rod bolts. Dizzy gear tends to be a bit of a week spot. You can source any hard to get stuff through the SVOCA sponsors.

mainly a standard rebuild. I wouldn't mind putting in the main and head studs. But I am looking for pistons, rings, bearings, gasket kit, oil pump, etc.

the bearings and gaskets can be had at any local parts store. Oil pump can also be sourced local, do NOT get a high pressure pump, or you WILL eat a dizzy gear. Esslinger has a high po aux shaft/dizzy gear you can get if you want to run a hi pressure pump.

Studs can be sourced from ARP. I used Total Seal rings on my rebuild. Most of the sponsors can assemble you a full kit. Think it cost me ~$550 for parts, $400 for machine work on a cleanup rebuild.

Pistons I cannot comment on. If you do replace the (good) stock forged pistons, a rotatining assmbly balance would be in order.

On my long list of things to do, is an updated parts list for various levels of engine rebuilds. I am hoping (fingers crossed) to get it done this week. Our web site has a section on engine pricing that should give you a general idea.

          Thanks,

                Engine kit

When I rebuilt my engine 4 years ago, I got a kit from the Northern Auto Parts website. The kit had pistons, rings, oil pump, bearings, all of the gaskets, camshaft and lash adjusters from what i can remember. I just looked and they still have the whole kit for $369: http://www.northernautoparts.com/Pro...ctModelId=3088

                Hope that helps

well, I took my block, head and crank to a machine shop first. He measured everything so I would know if the block had to be bored, the crank turned, or to get another head....

probably cast pistons of some sort

which there is nothing wrong with. cast pistons are very strong, just don't get any detonation, really high boots or use nitrous and they will last a good long time.

I would stay with forged pistons

                            cast pistons

They were cast pistons in the Northern Auto Parts kit. I've only put maybe 9000 miles on my mildly suped-up engine with this kit (it has a .420" lift Crane roller cam, 3" downpipe, and boost bumped up to 17 PSI for the only mods) and it's holding up great so far, runs great and doesn't burn a drop of oil.
