  • Cold Air Intake Questions

Just a couple questions. for my next mod i want to do a cai and bpv. i cant decide whether i want to go with a k&n on the vam and the forced4 bpv or the entire forced4 cia and bpv kit. has anybody done both and can attest to them? second question is has anyone in california smogged with either of these, or do you guys just put the stock box back on to smog? thanks in advance for all your guys help.

Either way both options wont pass smog (as far as I know)

ok well in that case, were there any hp differences between the 2? and maybe this is a dumb question, but since the the cai kit looks so pro, is there any chance i could pass it with a carb sticker off something else, like a k&n kit? thanks.

I have to pull my Forced4 CAI this week before I get smogged. No big deal. One screw, a few hose clamps and it's out. Last time I swapped a stock inlet assembly between cars for an inspection it took a whole ten minutes.

sounds good pat, i think thats gonna be my tax return or maybe sooner, but the other question i had was if anybody had any advice on getting the whole kit or just a cone filter on the vam and the bpv. anyway thanks again.

From what I understand, with just a cone filter attached to the vam you do open it up more and get a really cool sound, but you also take in a much hotter air charge since much of the air comes from the engine bay, and as you know with turbos hot = bad. I've had both setups you're asking about and have to admit that it's much nicer to have the air filter isolated from the engine bay.

Back from smog inspection with the 85.5

or, "To live and smog in L.A.".

Me (to smog guy): "You told me to ask for my fleet discount last time I was here."

Smog guy: "Hi! You're the guy with the turbo Mustangs!". Then he called his co-worker over to take a look under the hood.

Co worker: "Wow, I've only seen one of these before. This one is really clean!"

I had everything that got removed in back of the car and asked him detailed questions about whether I needed to remove all the Forced4 FMIC and CAI parts. Although none of the parts had a CARB EO exemption label, he told me that I didn't need to waste my time taking any of it off in the future. As long as all the original lines & hoses are installed in the proper place and functioning as originally intended, he doesn't waste his time looking for CARB cert labels. He said that any supercharger would be OK as per Appendix K (NOT appendix J, as 8T6SVO was told by his smog guy in another thread. Appendix J deals with OBD2 exemptions. Appendix K deals with aftermarket parts for our pre-OBD2 cars.) in the BAR emissions testing handbook. He even handed me the book when I asked to see it so that I could read through it.

                    Passed with flying colors.
                    15 MPH: O2 .3 / HC 81 /CO .03 / NO 32
                    25 MPH: O2 .3 / HC 18 / CO .00 / NO 327

Now I can throw all the parts back on and leave them on. I'll just need to take a small hole punch to the CAI box and run the charcoal cannister hose to it.

Unfortunately, all turbo Fords are "Test Only" in CA. It's supposedly a random sampling of 15% of all CA cars, but then why are all my SVO's test only? I should play the Lotto if I had this sort of predictability.

Install pics are on this thread:
