I used what was in the TDC sticky on setting timing. the key way is straight up per the pictures of how to set it. Is that not correctl? The string method is exactly what I did per the pictures. the key way is straight up putting the arrow just to the right.

Oh and Mike...it's an 84, but has 86 engine parts and that was the rotor that was on it so I replaced it with the same type when I did a tune up, hasn't been an issue. the timing belt itself was very easy to change and aligning everything was as well.

it's actually started pouring outside now so I'm done for the night.

Also, the manual says that when you install the belt, to give the engine 2 manual rotations (by hand) after the belt is installed, and to re-check the engine (belt) timing.
I will do this as well. I just rotated it outside to get those pictures so with the belts off, alt loose.. I can check it all again when it stops raining.

haha.. no I got the sensor. I plugged it in when I installed the TPS since it comes out of the same harness. I have nothing unplugged at this point. has to be the ignition/cam timing.

so let me get this straight so I don't ask a billion questions after screwing it up.

TDC puts the base timing at Zero if all is setup correctly right? at this point all I should need to do is pull the spout and advance it to 10 degrees.

anything else I need to know?

                  this is correct.

Try and get the distributor set up with the TFI as close to the block as possible, so when you advance the timing, it will be moving towards fresh air.

ok... thanks for all the help. It was just the timing, the dizzy basically. I removed the timing belt and did it one more time and got it perfect. then rotated the dizzy counterclockwise then started it..then adjusted it to 10 degrees.

Now, after all this I have two small issues, one of which isn't that big of a deal so I'll go to the important one.

I just drove it around the block, not really boosting it, but just going through the rpm range. I noticed that the turbo is really sluggish and no boost in most of the gears. I saw it boost to 6psi one time adn after that it's sluggish.

I checked the lines, but I have only one line to the actuator and the rest are capped off. I didn't touch the turbo besides removing the entire header with turbo, otherwise never touched the lines or turbo itself.

ok, I think I know what it is, but I'm baffled.. will these cars even run at 10 degrees retarded? On the timing markers it's directly on the 10 that is below indicating to me it's retarded.. that's the issue.. I'll correct it and see what happens.

yep, I got it. She purrs again!! My car was retarded..lol... 10 degrees. I put it at 10 advanced adn all the little noises went away and she idled perfectly. Drove it and it's great, no issues.

                          thanks everyone

hmm, I'll have to go over things again when I get home. I drove it work this morning.. 40 miles.. just about to work and I passed another car and boost was really sporatic.. something is wrong, or sticking somewhere..

make sure you don't have a hole in the vac line going to the waste gate. Or loose. THis will cause over boost and do just like you are talking about. Another thing would be a loose plug wire. Does the same thing just not over boost.
One more time and you will have it.
Time to clean up the engine bay!

I know it's not over boost.. it stays well below 10 when it does it, it's just sluggish. I'll check everything again. it drove great yesterday, this was only after 40 miles on the highway.
