  • how to check if a fuel Injector is stuck open

I want to try and find some ways of finding out if I have a fuel injector open and how to find out which one it is!

Unbolt the fuel rail and leave the injectors in the rail but removed from the intake manifold. Turn the key to on and the fuel pressure should build. A leaky injector should start leaking.

so do I unbolt just the upper intake?

no, you can remove the fuel rail and injectors without removing the upper intake. when you turn the key to ignition without starting..they fuel pump primes and pressurizes the system. If it's stuck open it will be obvious. use caution so gas doesn't go everywhere or get on stuff.

yeah but the way you explained it to me was to unbolt the lower intake and pull it off just a little, and the way brianO explained it was just to unbolt the fuel rail which sounds easier!

Yeap except the way brian explains it, if you hit the key and have the injectors only resting in the fuel rail, when pressure comes on........ what will happen there young skywalker.......... the injectors will pop out because of the fuel pressure. now if you have a way oof securing all 4 injectors, hell give it a shot. KEEP A FIRE EXTINGUISHER NEAR BY AND SOME ONE THERE TO WATCH

2 options here....... do the write up i did, safest way, most labor intensive, OR just get some new ones ANYWAYS and get the chip calibrated for the larger injectors. IMO i think this is a prime oppurtunity to upgrade

"but honey........ i have to have this to make the car run"

this is very true. replacing them you can do it without removing the intake, very easy. To do what you want it is safer to do it how he suggests.

if one is stuck open would it not still be stuck open if removed? meaning no need for ignition..

Honestly i have no idea. I guess it could be.

I had suggested he remove the lower intake (upper also) and leave everything connected. Insert rags or paper towels in each port and have someone hit the key. this way fuel wouldn't spray everywhere and nothing has the chance of instatly releasing 40psi of fuel into the engine compartment uncontrolled.

if one of the rags/towels is wet, then he found the problem.

the best way would be to take them out and send them off to a shop, but for the price of that, he wouldn't have to spend much more to upgrade the injectors. IMO he'll need them anyways, as he is a speed junky like me. Plus seeing what my car did for power really made him power hungry......

How about pulling the spark plugs, doing a KOEO for 1/2 a dozen times.......check fuel pressure and look in the cylinders.........?

that sounds much easier and safer... even putting something in the plug holes so that you could tell is wet with fuel.. I like that

I offered the sugestion of paper towels in the plug holes ; but
1 the valves could be closed,
2 if it is leaking, it will most likley go down the cyl wall, and be hard to check

I'm going to make myself up a tester at some point, but what I can't decide is what liquid to run through the injectors, I don't want to run gas...

it is true I am power hungry! ;-) oh and I finally steped on it today kevin and only doing 12psi it felt REALLY strong! It felt good WAY better than before! But I think I'll just try it your way! Since I dont have the $300 for the chip and another $280 for the 55lbers!
