well well...I dropped the tank today to replace the filler neck grommet. Low and behold..it's not the cause of the fuel leak.

it's the vent grommet..I can see a trail of gas going down each side of it. That scares me seeing as how there is electrical connections right there and at any time it could have shorted with the fuel. Good lord!!!

anyways, after looking high and low here, local part stores just do not carry this thing and MD is closed. So, I'll have to order one from 50resto if they can be had seperately. I see no fuel stains anywhere else and the sealant I put around the filler neck grommet is completely sealed.

    arg!!

cool, thanks. btw, the filler grommet I removed had no tears or anything. I reinstalled it as you suggested, it popped in and can be turned. It will be a few days before the vent grommet comes in.

so I replaced the vent grommit and kept the same valve... gee, guess what...went to fill up, looked under neath and gas was coming out the same place. GREAT..

I dropped the tank again and verified the vent tube has no obstruction all teh way to the front. I pumped air through it and it came out the other end.

Mike..could this valve be causing this?? I'll go to the dealer tomorrow and get a new one, but gas should not be coming out of that hole even with a new grommet.. I don't know

yeah, while filling it up no gas came out of the filler neck grommet..it was seeping from the top. when I dropped the tank you could see the stain of gas coming from the vent grommet. car was level.

idea.. if the pressure can't get out through the vent tube would it pressurize and make the gas come out teh top??

INCREDIBLE... would you believe this is STILL leaking gas from the exact same place???

this is the frist time I've actually filled up for a long time since I don't drive much these days. I put the gas pump on the slowest rung and I watched behind the tire to see if any gas came out. The INSTANT the gas pump stopped, gas started coming down from the top of the gas tank. The filler neck grommet is bone dry.

I have replaced the vent valve, vent grommet, filler neck grommet, fixed both fuel lines, verified the vent line works..

what else is there??? new tank??? damnit....

New tanks are cheap and might be easier than trying to figure out where/how it's leaking. You could always just not fill it all the way up, lol.

BTW, my 50 resto grommet isn't leaking, I've filled the tank up and nothing, works just fine for me.

the only thing left is the tank itself..everything else has been replaced. how frustrating.. have to drain another tank of gas into my other car.. I don't have enough gas cans..lol..

well, 50resto is just up the road, but with gas prices it's cheaper just to order it.

any other ideas before I drop $$ on a new tank??

actually, I'm going to go by Motion and see if Jim has any old tanks laying around in good shape and maybe see about that throttle body dog bone cable as well.

well, jim hooked me up with a new throttle body dog bone cable thingy.. the plastic kind.

he suggested trying epoxy on the grommet/vent first before shelling out the 100 bones for a new tank

One thing.....how about the 2 cheap orings for the fuel pump and sender rings?

those are both brand new and neither are leaking any fluids at all. the only place fuel is coming out is the vent oraface. there must be some type of flaw on the tank or something I don't know about. I'll try the epoxy and see what happens.

well, while the SVO was down for the brake cables I decided to drop the tank since it was almost empty..and use epoxy on the vapor vent area. I let it sit and dry for 2 days. This evening I went and filled it up again and sure enough..once the pump stopped I kneeled down behind the rear tire to watch for fuel and some did come out again from the top from the same place. not as much as before, but it still came out. I had epoxied the grommit into place then put the valve in and epoxied that as well...

I guess I need to invest in a new tank now... sux

craziest thing I've had to deal with yet on this car.

thanks mike, but I'll drive up to 50resto and grab one later on since I'll be in that area. I'm through messing with this and I can't have gas leaking every time I drive.

so what ever happened with this? did you replace the vent valve grommet? If so, where did you get it?
