  • Downpipe info

While doing some reading about down pipes, a thread gave this link http://www.sacramento-mustang.com/cgi-bin/cart.pl?db|svo.dat|exhaust
Its shows one down pipe for 100 bucks, then another for 400 but that one says its good for 50 hp. Is this true?? Or is it the 3"pipe itself? Also if they are for the same year why would they be different shapes?? Is there any advantage to the 400 pipe? X

the $400 pipe is stailness, and has a interated wasteate housing. It's also a ATR, I'm not sure it still available. Last I heard they were going our of business, filing bankruptcy, or something like that.

I'd say the 50 hp number is excessive in either case, 25 is more realistic on a stock engine, and nothin to sneeze at

Just do it! The 3" is one of the best bang for the buck improvements.

ATR has closed, gone out of business. Plus Ive read that there where some fitment issues with that downpipe. But Im sure it would yield some significant HP for the money tho.

So....Is it the stainless one any better than the other one?? Or are the they basically the same? Thanks X

My .02 says that with the amount of heat going through that pipe, you're not going to have to worry about the thing rusting...ATR has a history of not doing things right...there are people that have them and are happy with them. You can have the same exact pipe custom made for you (with the wastegate) for less $$$...There is certainly nothing wrong with the Sac pipe itself; if you can get one. I waited so long I was able to order it, wait, give up, have a custom one made, installed before I was even told it was back ordered...

There is another source for downpipes other than sac mustang but Not sure if he is welcome here anymore. If you get stuck and cant figure it out PM me, or check that terrible auction site. He has them there quite a bit.

Yes there is a difference, The Sac dp bolts to the stock elbow which has the exhuast flowing thru at 90*. So the Sac dp isnt a true 3" dp, it just flairs out from the stock elbow. I have the Sac dp and its a good piece with no fittment issues what so ever. The ATR dp eliminates the stock 90* elbow and bolts directly to the turbine for a true 3" dp. So this allows for less restriction of exhuast and much increased HP and spool up. You can have one custom made as long as you use the stock elbow. To eliminate the elbow you will have to use the collar from the stock elbow which would mean cutting it off and then rewelding it to the new 3" dp. I dont know of anyone who would fab one(from stainless 3" mandrell bend) for $400. But it all depends on what rescources you have availible to you.

                  Down pipe??

I undersatnd about going the 3" downpipe way.. If you had a pipe made to take the place of the converter in the 2 1/2" id, (i.e. for the track), would that have better flow than a 3" dp with a converter?? The stock converter is the biggest restriction in airflow, right??

I didn't say custom made stainless...I was referring to 3" steel and using or modifying the existing elbow....sorry for the confusion. Any GOOD muffler shop would do it for you.

Ok, thanks. I saw a 3"elbow for sale about 6 months ago when I was on here. I could not find it last night. I thought I saw it from one of the vendors listed here but did not see it this time. Anyone know where it is? Sounds like I need the elbow and then a good 3" system.

Also, If there is a 3"elbow available, will it fit othe turbo's? I have the stock one now. I think its a t-3. Would an a/market elbow fit say a t3/t4? I have a lot of other things to do before a turbo upgrade but I like to buy things once. Thanks X

On a T3/T4, the compressor side is the T4 addition. You just need to spec the Ford style turbine housing when ordering it. Then all the exhaust should bolt up in the same place. 40Bob is the guy who makes the 3" elbow. He has a vendor ad at Turboford but that site is down at the moment. try 40bob.com.

                          Bob's a good guy,
Rod also makes the 3" elbows as well. -- search for Rod header, and you should find a thread with his email address in it.

I did a search. I found a guy with a user name of rod87t-bird. It looks like the same guy as in a post he talks about "his" header. I tried his homepage but it was not avail and I did not see an e-mail address for him. Does anyone have a web link for me so I can look at his elbow?? Thanks X

Also here is the post http://www.svoca.com/forum/showthrea...ght=rod+header
Another question. I have a ported E6 that I bought off one of the mods of the turbo t-bird site 6 months ago. In the above thread the header guys says an e6 is only worth 11hp. Its says a good header is worth 30-40. One guy posted that he went from an e6 to an Atr header with no noticed improvement. I am sure many here have done the swap. So my question is...Is it worth the extra money for my car to go with the header / 3' elbow / 3' system vs the E6 / 3' elbow / 3" system. Thanks X
