  • Door striker plastic piece

I need several of the plastic or whatever material for my SVO. Anybody know a source? Ford says they are not available. Not sure how many fox bodies are left in the bone yards.

    Any help will be appreciated.

Check Late Model Restoration, they offer the whole door striker with the plastic sleeve.

Main issue with trying to replace just the plastic bushing is that the washer on the striker bolt is captivated by the threads. You can get the washer off, but it isn't easy. The threads are formed on the shaft after the bushing and washer are in place, so they were not meant to come apart like the later striker bolts. At this year's Reunion all (3) of my striker bushings gave up the ghost...literally on the same day...I should have bought a lottery ticket. Anywho, I did the same search as you did and ended up just visiting my local auto parts stores to purchase (3) new striker bolt assemblies, since none of them had (3) hanging in their Help! section. They were ~$8 each, so not too bad and work just fine.

Seems the aftermarket has the wrong listing for our striker bolts, they want to move us up to the 87-93 striker bolt style that has an additional guide flange on it, but the one that is correct for our cars is the Dorman #38421 unit that looks like this:

This is the unit all the aftermarket companies recommend for our car, but I didn't want to try and experiment to see if it would work or not:

Something I've wanted to check but can't seem to remember when I'm at Home Depot is to check the PEX plumbing to see if there is a match for the bushing. I will be re-plumbing my house since it has the Poly-Butyl crappola in it since 1991.

I used the newer one with the extra flange and it works just fine. I read the extra flange was supposed to prevent the doors from possibly springing open during a crash. I'm not really sure how and I hope I never test it.

Since I show my car in Concours, I elected to keep the original bolt when I had to replace my bushings. I purchased a used set of door strikers, carefully cut off the washers from my original bolts, removed the washers from the used set, drilled the holes in the washers just large enough to fit over the threads, had my original bolts replated, and then reassembled everything with new bushings I picked up from NPD. In the future, the plastic bushings will be easy to replace.

^^^^Yikes - a lot of work, but I understand with the class you show your car in....

You can also take the "HELP" style plastic bushings and slice them open. I usually slice them on a 45 degree angle. A wrap or 2 with some electrical tape will ensure they stay in place.

                    Hatch striker

I just picked up a door striker bolt from Auto Zone #38421 to replace the striker for the rear hatch. Low and behold they are different. The door striker use a 7/16"x 14 NC bolt while the hatch striker uses a 10mm x 1.5 bolt. Well what can I say?

Hate to say this, but thanx for that info! I have yet to swap out my hatch striker, so I was under the assumption all three strikers were the same and would have run into the same issue with mine. Looks like the Dorman #38445 is what we need for our hatch striker then. That also has the extra flange, which again is unknown if that will work with the hatch latch mechanism, but it does have the M10x1.5mm thread.

I think I was able to unscrew the washer from the striker on our 86, but am not 100% on that. That work was a couple of years ago <bangs forehead on desk>.

                            Just can't catch a break

Here is a picture of the original hatch striker bolt (missing the plastic bushing), a Dormans 38445 replacement hatch striker bolt and a Dormans 38421 door striker bolt. Note the smaller diameter of the new replacement hatch bolt (the one with the bracket) it measures .581", the diameter of the plastic sleeve. The replacement door striker measures .675" . I have no idea what the original one is for a measurement. Can someone let me know what the diameter of an original hatch striker bushing is, then I can see what I will try next. Thanks

Let me see if I have enough of my original bushing left to get an accurate measurement on the diameter for the hatch striker. Certainly is a bit frustrating that the hatch striker is unique and not listed anywhere out there.
