    Repaired

This is what I found and how I remedied the hatch striker bolt repair. I measured the hatch latch with the jaws closed and found the closest diameter measurement to be .680". With the purchased pieces I disassembled the two new strikers (38421 & 38445) and reassembled using the 10x1.5 mm bolt with bracket and the bushing (grey) from the 38421 door striker. Fortunately for the purchased door strikers, the large washers were able to screw off the bolts to remove the bushings. While the original striker I still have not been able to remove. With all that said, the hatch closes with no rattles and I am very pleased.

I purchased the striker cover from cjponyparts for 2.09 each no freight. The door striker washers came off easy. The hatch striker there was no way to get the washer off without damaging the threads.

I did have a brain fart ( thanks ADHD) it looked like the piece was a pvc material. I took a dremal tool with a cutoff wheel and made 1 slot down the side. Then soaked it not water from the tap for around 10 minutes. I then used a gap filling super glue to the pvc. Worked like a champ and cheap

So the Dorman 38421 is what I need to replace my door strikers on my 1986?

Yes, but it looks like you can also use the 38448 per RFranklin's response in post #7 of this thread.

Back when I did this I pressed the washer off and then chased the treads with a die. Made a bushing out of delrin so it might hold up to the elements better. Been working for 7 years now. Couldn't find a striker for the hatch back then.

Well, I finally got around to replacing all (3) of my striker bolts and can give a quick review of what I did. A full write up will be posted in my project thread for those interested in all the details.

I replaced both door strikers with the Dorman HELP! #38421 units. I had to replace the bushing sleeve on one of the strikers with one out of the Dorman HELP! #38424 bushing sleeve kit due to it being excessively hard/rigid. I am guessing it was one that was hanging on the shelf for a long time and simply dried out.

The hatch striker was accomplished using the Dorman HELP! #38445, bushing sleeves from the #38424 and some wire harness tape. The O.D. of the #38445 bushing sleeve is too small for the OEM latch jaws and the bushing sleeves in the #38424 are the correct O.D. (14.9 vs 18.0mm respectively). Only issue to tackle then was that the #38424 bushing sleeve I.D. was larger than the #38445 bolt shaft (12.5 vs 11.2mm respectively). I wrapped some wire harness tape (electrical tape w/o adhesive) around the bolt shaft to fill the 1.3mm diameter gap. I then used (1) 'short' bushing sleeve and a 6mm slice off of the other 'short' bushing sleeve to make up the 22.4mm length needed.

                Installed #38445: Striker - Door_Dorman_38445_04.jpg

All in all, everything now closes up nicely and tightly without any rattles. Hopefully all will be good for many years to come.
