  • Tire Recommendation

    Need a recommendation for tires.
Stock rims, never in rain (well maybe if it rains on the way to Bama). Treadlife not to much of an issue. 5000 miles a year tops, probably less. And will give me a grin at the Barber Motorsports on track day (remember I'm a novice at this but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it if allowed).
Was eyeing Yokohama AVS ES 100 at Tire Rack. 85 bucks a piece, not bad every couple of years!
    Or maybe pick from THESE
    Thanks

Not sure if you meant to but you had 225/55/16 in your search instead of 225/50/16.

I had Yok's ES100, hated them, wore like cr^p, loud. I have 245/45/16 Kumho 711 http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/reifens...146&Country=US on the car now, I like them. Old school tread design. For some reason the 245/45/16 is the only VR rated size in the model, all the other 711's are HR's. The Kumho MX gets good ratings for a dual use tire, large tread blocks.

I would not be afraid to run 245/45/16's, the original Gatorback 225/50/16 were a very large 225, I have an original GY and it is as wide as a 245.

      I liked em'

Chris, I loved the Yoko AVS Intermediates I had on my Neon ACR before. The biggest problem I had was tread life. They only lasted 25k miles, but they were hard miles, plus a few autocrosses thrown in. I think they had a treadwear rating of 320 and these have even less (280). I'm guessing they are the replacements for the Intermediates. All in all I was very happy with them and if treadwear isn't that big a deal for you, they should be OK.

I've got the Kuhmo 712's and they're really good. Stick like s**t to a blanket in the wet and the road feel is really good.

Bud, you're saying that you're running the 245/45/16 in Kumho 711 with stock'ish SVO suspension with no rub??

I've used the ES100 on my SVO (when it had stock wheels and with 17 x 8 inch Cobra wheels) and my ZX3 Focus...a decent tire, nothing "spooky" in terms of handling or braking. I feel it's a good tire for the money.

However, for a low miles dry day car, I'd get the Kuhmo MX...good value for the dollars and sticky enough for open track performance without going to a R-compound.

Yea, no rubbing ever. The original Gatorbacks were very large for their size. My 245's are the same width as the original GY's. I had 225 Yok ES100's and they look tiny. As you probably know, tire manufacture's interpratation of tire sizes are pretty loose.

You might want to look at the Firestone Wide Ovals. They are really a Bridgestone tire and will work for what you are wanting. I had AVON Tech M500 on the Road Warrior for last years AutoX and picked up almost 2 seconds when comparing myself against Rich Alvino in '04 and '05.

I just went out and measured my 20 year old Gatorback (5000 miles) on a very slightly bent, insuranced replaced rim. It's roughly 24.5 x 9.5 overall. The Khumo site says the 245/45/16 is 24.6 x 9.6, pretty close.
                    Khumo/Firestone/Yokohama...hmmmm
My Dunlops are 10 years old, pleennnty of tread but I fear too old. Do you guys agree?

                      Like I said, same size.
I would not run those tires on the track, way to old. A friend works for a firm that is hired by automakers and tiremakers that investigates wrecks. He has told me scary stories about old tires. Be careful with spares also. People have a flat, put their 10+ year old spare on, it blows out and they die.

Kumho ECSTA MX, are really nice tires, great wear life and good for the track. I think they are cheap too. Never used them myself, But i spent 4 years watching the Korean racers drive the crap out of them. Got a good rating out of a magizine i read also.

Another good tire is the Yokohama ADVAN NEOVA series tires. Though finding the sizes is difficult Only offered in 17's. Just checked sizes. If you have 17's they are a good tire. Little Pricey. On my GTI, the tires allowed me to spray in First where as before i had to finish spinning 1st, then juice it in second. Keep in mind too my GTI is Front Wheel Drive.

And i came up with the BFG G-Force KD not the KDW (which isnt bad, and NOT the KDWS )

Im also partial to the Nitto 555R.

Look at Discounttire.com ( they got free shipping right now )

I have these BFG's 245/40-17 on 8" rims and they do stick like glue. I only do 2500 miles a year over the 7 months or so when we don't have SNOW!! So I don't care about tread wear as they will be HARD before I'll wear e'm out.
