My 86 1D project

I was being kind of facetious, but there IS a paint out there that looks exactly like bare metal. We saw a '60's Impala painted that color in a car show once. It looked pretty convincing. they even air brushed 'rivets' on the body. Like the mat colors, though, I'm thinking it could get old before it's time.
Other than an original SVO color, the only other one I like is the teal they used on the 93 Cobras. A friend's autocross Mustang is painted grabber orange, which is kind of nice. I've threatened to paint our Firebird in that Ford teal. He has a Ford painted a Chevy color, I figured we could have a GM painted in a Ford color. ;-)

gbeaird I know the bare metal look as well. Not for this one tho...LOL. I do have a 56 Chevy Truck that is a "patina" truck and I cleared over the entire outside to preserve the look. It is an original LA built truck and lived out there all its life and out in the "sun" to give it that perfect patina. (only the hood had been replaced but I matched it pretty well to rest of the truck

A few folks around here have done the same clear-over-patina to freeze the look. A couple folks used a full gloss clear though and it just looks horrible, it needs to be a slight satin finish like your 56.Ted

I actually went over the rust with "blue steel" that converted to a more "rich" appearance. I watered down the blue steel tho a bit. I feel the look is perfect and it is all the original patina. I then clear coated it with satin clear.
The engine compartment really came out nice. I will post a link to the picture folder

Wow, that is just a bit of work you put into that 56, awesome job 'blending' in all the repair work you did...spot on I have to say!! Looking forward to what that Baltic Gray looks like on the SVO.Ted

Indeed! Nice work!! I really like the repairs that you tried to make it look like a NOT repair. Kind of reminds me of my 69 Dodge W300 Power Wagon. Similar condition, but I ended up selling it for more than I paid for it, so win-win. I DO miss it, though.Gene Beaird,

Yes, the repairs were meticulously done as best I could. My thought process is that I did NOT want open holes in the door bottoms and cab corners. I spent a lot of hours making sure the Truck is clean of dirt and debris on the inside. If I got caught in the rain or something I do not want water and crap getting inside the doors and in between the outer and inner cab corners.
It looks pretty good, you know it is a 10 footer. The truck is a tribute to my Father who was a Chevy Big Block guy BUT he loved my SVO and would NOT let me sell it years ago when I didnt have room for it.
That is part of the reason I am doing the 1D over "again" but this time she will be kept inside and always have some microfiber and spray wax in the trunk...LOLFrank

My biggest concern will be trying not to scratch anything when I do all the reassembling....smh
I think the baltic gray will be very dark in the shade or at night but will really stand out in the sunlight. I hope the black trim "pops" and stands out enough. I think it will. Car should be done this week at some point but they still have to do all the trim and I have to drop off the wings also.
My upper wing was one that I picked up recently. It was splitting at the seams bc the internal screws are stripped out BUT the wing has no sag. I ended up using some 2-part adhesive to make stay tight at the seams but ended up using long strand fiberglass filler to cover the seams and worked them smooth. A real PITA and I hope it stays together bc it came out good. I will post some picsFrank
