  • Additional benefits include the high octane rating (in all my internet searching I have yet to find a reference to detonation on e85) and the cooling impact on the intake charge.

And the thing I like the most... it smells like burnt rum. No more coming into the house with the gasoline stench. Ethanol burns extremely clean and is quite pleasant to work with.

    • I'm still having trouble with an intermittent ignition. Its a big part of our cold start problem. I think I'll step back and wire up the square wave sensor that Pat figured out for us. I'll take pics along the way.

        What exactly is intermittent?

You still running the MSD unit?

Never mind. I just remembered you got rid of the msd last year. It didn't play well with the ECU.

            • I quit using the prime map, it had fouled the plugs. This morning I tried to start it and had no spark again. Measured the VR gap to make sure that hadn't screwed up, it was in spec. The computer was showing an rpm signal when I cranked. Hmmm.

Finally went back old school and pulled the plugs, they were soaked. Swapped in a dry set, shut off the primer and fired right up.

After it warmed up I calibrated the O2 sensor with the computer, now the LM-1 and computer read the same value.

Then went over and worked on the track whore Miata that will have its maiden voyage on the 25th and 26th up at Thunderhill, Scott and Geoff are going to drive.

While there I grabbed 10 gallons of E85. Put it in the tank when I got home, increased the fuel pressure to 50 psi to help with atomization (I think I'll push it up to 55, with 15psi of boost it'll max out at 70, I don't want to go over 75) fired it up, richened up the map and away it went.

I'm having problems with data logging so I think I'll spend the rest of the evening reading the manual and trying different things on the computer, sans car. The O2, map, and injector duty cycle are not showing on the trace, but the map and duty cycle show on the gauge page. The O2 sensor has me baffled. When I go to the O2 sensor page it'll show the lambda number, but it doesn't show on the data trace or the gauge page.

              Love this electronics stuff.

Called the dyno guy to reserve some of his time the week of the 20th. We'll see if he's free.

              • Glad to see an update! I was needing a good laugh! I don't know what will happen first, you on the track or me finish painting the cars. My bet is on you. It sounds like you still have some gremlins. But it is getting close. Have any pics of the new sensor setup? Or the Miata?

                • Good point Mike.

After doing a lot of reading this evening, I suspect that my problem data logging AFRs may lie with the LM-1 not the Haltech. I fear that the wrong output was wired into the Haltech and the LM-1 is emulating a narrow band. I went back and read some stuff that Mike Fitzwater sent me and it gave me the hint. We'll see tomorrow when I reprogram the LM-1.

Hey Bob...your such a slacker! If you spent half the time working on that blue piece instead of painting red on my car, you'd have that thing on the track! Geez...the nerve of some people!
Hoping to get on the track soon

                              • Spent this last weekend up at Thunderhill with the TW Miata. Finished it up on Thursday last, of course the lexan windshield was the last thing to get done. We loaded up Friday afternoon and hauled up to Willows.

Fun weekend. The car worked flawlessly. My buddy Scott drove the car in HPDE 1, his first time at the track. He had a blast. His instructor was thrilled with the car, took it out for hot laps in HPDE 4 with Geoff as a passenger. The instructor loved the car and wanted to take it out some more to take pictures with the Gocamera. Unfortunately we ran out of batteries and storage cards.

Time to get back to the Mustang. I called the dyno guy and visited his shop last week to try to get back on track. No joy. I'm thinking about taking it over to the local dragstrips test and tune and tune it myself. $50 and who knows how many trips down the strip and we should start getting it focused in.
