I've been contemplating putting an IRS into the rear of the SSCC car. For those that have done this, have you tried to fit the stock SVO wheels under there? If so, where there any fitment issues?

    Thanks.

Pink the SVO stock wheels will not fit over the calipers of the IRS setup

IIRC the 16" rim fits over the caliper the problem is when you goto bolt it on the caliper holds the rim from seating on the hub. Now if you go with some wheel spacers and roll the quarters I think it will work.
I was gonna do this but realized the cobra fronts were too big for the stock rims.

Rob, we gonna have to disagree on this one...

The only problem is, the tie rod ends stick out too far. That takes about 30 secs per side with a die grinder... you just need to clean up the end of the tie-rod end.

they clear the calipers just fine.
I'm going through my pics bucket right now, I think I have one or 2 of my car with them on there. they don't stick out with stock sized tires.

          EDIT:: Found one

Yes, Eric is right...typically the clearance problem with the IRS is the Tie Rod mounting point.....we have a similar problem fitting 17X10.5 wheels on an IRS equipped car and removing some material for clearance usually does the trick.

Also for anyone running a wide wheel...when the suspension is extended there can be tire clearance issues with the rear mounting bolt for the IRS....install a button head type bolt will give added clearance there.

              I stand corrected

I was going with larger wheels from the begining so I did not investigate the fittiment issues with the stock wheels other than quickly trying them on after IRS install and concluded my incorrect info.

              Sorry if this caused confusion

No worries....glad to see there is an option that requires little modification to the stock parts (IRS) to fit the SVO wheels. This would allow me to keep the stock look but have a "better" rear suspenion (although some may argue it).

Now...the next question. I've started to consider this swap but I would like to hear some opinions. This would be for the SSCC car and I wanted to know if you think this COULD be a viable option as opposed to going to a full tilt Max Motorsport option or something similiar. The car will not be a daily driver and I'm not even sure if it will be road legal (at least by MD's current laws). I won't be drag racing the car. I think most know the overall intent.....

I've found what appears to be a good deal on a '03 Cobra IRS set-up but I don't know a great deal about them.....

The 03 IRS is for sure the better year if it is a good deal go for it
it is not a hard install

If you are just going to track the car I would go with the Torque arm suspension....It is best for that use
Now the IRS will be fun too but I think its advantages are most noticed on public roadways giving the car a nice 'feel'

For what you have planned, an 8.8 with a panhard rod would do what you need for less expense, less labor, and less weight. Why would you need a torque rod for running at a constant speed?

just be careful on your fronts. I have sn95 up front, and IRS in the rear. The sn95 wheels tuck under nicely in the front, but stick WAY out in the back.

So I'm going to have to find some set of wheels, that I can run sn95 fronts, and s197's in the rear, that still look like they match.

Well, the front is pretty much already decided. Fatman control arms & Koni's. I will probably add some C&C plates, but that's about it.

Oh yeah....I want to run stock SVO Wheels too....just for the look.

I just got my modified IRS frame brackets back tonight so I can utilize the quad shock mounting points for my Capri IRS project. Another option to the stock IRS tie rod ends would be heim joints and aliminum steering tube. That is what I am planning to use.

I had a really hard time finding the driveshaft flange, So I swapped the rear-end flange.
