No fuel pressure - new pump

    Took the pump out and it worked on the bench. Put it back in and checked it and it worked. Only thing I could think that happened is the connector on the top of the pump was knocked off when I put the tank back in. I had trouble getting it in as I couldn't get it high enough on the right side to get the strap all the way around.

      I didn't seem to have any issues with the lines getting in the way. They all just went right back to where they were originally. From the back of the car there is a connection were the wire looms split. I just undid this and the tank would reach the floor by only disconnecting the two fuel lines.

      The fit problem seemed like I wasn't pushing the big end up on the right angle or something.

        Still have to get the tank put into place.

        Should be running tonight. Starting to get cold here so the winter projects are going to begin soon. Just want to make sure it is running well before I start. New interior, valve stem seals, Adj. Cam sprocket, clean up more of the wiring under the hood, and yes a heater core! are on the agenda.

          All back together. Ran it for 10 minutes and so far so good. Maybe tonight or this weekend I'll drive around the neighborhood a few times and see how it goes.

            Wouldn't you know it! I put most of the interior back together and drove a few places last night and then ~25 miles to work and then about half way back it just quit. Couple of minutes later it started and I drove for about 20 minutes and it quit again. Made it home, then a few hours later I went to start looking for problems and it wouldn't start...no fuel pressure!!!!!

              When you say no fuel pressure, is the pump running (do you hear it hum?)?


              I would poke around on the electrical side, like ignition switch, etc.

                    Is there a point in the wiring harness that I can eliminate everything but the fuel pump?

                      Next check for feed power at the inertia switch, then at the pump connector itself. You could probably check at the 4-pin connector at the side of the tank instead of dropping it again if you have confidence in the tank harness.

                      Be sure to use a test light instead of a voltmeter. At least the light will draw *some* current while the meter will not. And put the test light across the harness ground and power - to test the ground path also.

                      That's about it. I'd suspect the most likely issue to be either the relay is fubar'd or the yellow wire does not have full-time, good +12VDC to it (at the fuel pump relay). If the ;later is the case, feed another [fused] wire from the starter solenoid + terminal to the relay.
                      I suspect of the relay also. I may just swap in a new one and the follow along with your suggestions.

                      After re-reading that last paragraph the started relay is an area that I really would like to clean up. There are so many wires connect on the one post that I can barely get a not on it. So I'm going to make sure I have a good connection there.

                        Got lazy and wanted to do other things on Saturday so I picked up a new fuel relay. Went home put it in and it fired right up. Later in the day I tried to start it again and it wouldn't start...no fuel pressure. Back to the drawing board...

                              Did some testing today.

                              The inertia switch has power to both wires.
                              The relay has power to the Red/bk hash wire and the Yellow wire. When I turn the key on I get power to the other wire until I hear the click of the relay and then no power. Is this the correct operation of the relay?

                                Dropped the tank and removed the connector at the top. I inspected the wires and they look fine. Put it back on and tried it and the pump runs.

                                I don't see anywhere I could have a problem other than the connector is old and probably doesn't seat like it used to. Though it goes on tight and you can't wiggle it.

                                I guess all I can do now is drive it and hope.
