get the ssp flow restricktor . it will slow the flow through the heater core and help it last a little longer, i got it through green sales . com , i dont have have the part # but i think one of the others will chime in soon and can supply it , i think they were 4.00 plus shipping , they had 10 when i order 2 , i have 1 around some where but dont know where
oh yeah I meant to ask about that.. does the new core come with a restrictor at all?? I'm goign pick it up in about 30 minutes.. if it will last me through the winter I'll be happy..haha
I've been reading all the how-to's on the heater core removal and stuff.
I just went to Ford and got the HC.. and correct, it has no flow restrictor. In our cars the restrictor was in the hose. Since there was no part number for the restrictor itself he let me look through the later model hoses and I found one with a restrictor in it already. I just have to cut the end off the hose and connect it and I'm done.
I've already bypassed my heater core and my A/C is discharged. When I replaced the radiator I put only water in the system with rust remover and that is when it started leaking on the passenger side. It was basically water so thank goodness no smell or nice stains inside.
I read that there is black sealant holding the HC in the case and it should all be removed and cleaned off and replaced with new sealant. A lot of the write ups don't include that bit of info.
yes, make sure you remove ALL of the black sealer from the edges where the core sits and put down some fresh black RTV before you put the new core in place.
Remove the nuts in the engine compartment, pull the accumulator, then remove only the right side bolts on the upper and lower part of the dash. Then pull the blower motor assembly out first (separated from the heater box). Way easier than dropping the column, and pulling the entire dash. When I worked at Ford, book time was 6.5 hours. Once you do a few you can get 'em done in and hour to an hour and a half.

Brian, if you have air, you don't have to disconect the lines. There is a bracket under the hood that needs to be loosened and then the lines have enough slack in them to be pulled into the car. An old dash mechanic tought me this. Tom
I'm at the halfway point now. I've started about 2 hours ago and I have the dash sitting in the front and can reach the assembly. I just had to search on where the next bolts were that I missed.. looks like it's on the bottom on the firewall. if I can do this I should have the heater core done and the rest of the day spent putting it all back together.
train...yes I do have air, but it's discharged so I just disconnected it all.
