  • trick to gas tank grommit?

most everyone has been through this before.. replacing the gas tank grommet for the fueler neck because it leaks. Well mind leaked as well when turning left so I dropped the tank, replaced pump, and replaced the grommet while at it...

now...it still leaks. turn left, out comes the gas..I pulled over and looked underneath and it was fresh gas.

any tricks to sealing these things?? I just ordered another grommet just in case. I even put sealant around the area of the neck where it goes in....GRRRRRRRR

    ?

    TIA

hummm, I just lubed mine up, to make sure it didn't pinch when I installed the neck, and never had an issue.

Yeah, you have to be careful not to cut it with the end of the filler tube.

          I was sure I didn't hurt it reinstalling..done it several times, but I guess there's a chance.

the grommets you guys use..are they Ford parts or repro ones? I purchased from 50resto.

I guess I'll try it again and make sure it's got lubrication.. that sounded adult in nature!

The fuel neck to tank grommet should be lubricated only with 10W40 motor oil. This is according to the Ford Shop Manual. When I get home from work I'll look up the Ford part number for the grommet and post it.

Fleming swears by the ford one. Which I usually use, but last time I did one, I used an aftermarket... I couldnt tell .02 of difference.

are they more prone to leak from the seal around the filler tube itself or the seal on the tank? the tube is true round and I cleaned it off and sprayed something on it.. so I'm thinking the tank filler port is not sealing.. not sure though.

the first one did the exact same thing so something isn't right if it's still doing it with a new grommet.

Oooppsss.......I used KY. Sealed fine and most likely had warm fuzzy feeling as well.

                        Ford part #

F4ZZ-9072-DA and it is called a gasket.

The inside lip is very plyable and will seal a round or slightly oval filler neck tube at the gas tank. I just installed my tank three days ago to complete a vehicle safety and it had to pass a full tank test of petrol without any leaks or spills. Luckily I still had the plastic bag with the part number.

YEap replaced mine without issues about 2 years ago. Used a ford part i got from my buddy (he has like 20 of them ).

                          I also suspect a tear.

ok, so it sounds like the most common failure is the part that seals around teh filler tube..meaning it gets cut or snagged upon reinstallation.. is that about right?

Mike F. , I'm currently using one from 50resto and the new one comes in today. Would pictures of it help you at all?

I have one from 50 resto too. I haven't filled my tank up yet. Hopefully I can do that soon, I'm just waiting on my firewall clutch adjuster and new quadrant so I can actually disengage the clutch.
