I can give you a first hand account of those late night turbo exchanges! Especially at reunions. Your emergency reunion package should include:

Several bottles of emergency Dewars well hidden

Have several sets of camera batteries for those guys in red

    Have LOTS of lights

Have an extra turbo available from those great guys in St Louis

Have crews ready to make runs to the local parts store

Have extra nuts, bolts, gaskets, hose clamps, intercooler hoses and penetrating oil available.

Some mood music and a peanut gallery offering advice on how to connect a boost control valve.

I also had help from these people Mitch, Indian Dave, Dragpack, rschonegg, Bas, Fleming, James, Henson, Chaulky and crew, crazy northern Kanooks, DAVEZ84SVO, Larado, The Hubers & friends (Papa John, John, Steve), Nota50, & some others I can't remember right now.

We had some nice commentary from NavySVO, JayG, Gator, Pat, and the Hubers on the exchange also.

There were 3 major obsticles on the exchange for me. The first was coming up with the turbo. The second was the the fitting on the exhaust manifold for the egr tube, it was a major pain to break loose and get off. The 3rd was the second bolt on the oil drain line at the turbo, get an aftermarket for this and you will save big time on your exchange.

As you can see a turbo exchange at the reunion is a very memorable experience and a great way to meet some truely great people and make some tremendous friends.

I drove a long way for the reunion and these people made it a great experience and not a bust and disappointment. I owe alot of people!

Good luck on your exchange, you know where to get some help...........Raven
Boy, am I blessed! Happy New Year!

Just install the plug wires BEFORE you install the intercooler. The firing order is cast on the intake manifold.

He means anything. If you wipe your dirty hands on the collectible Gearhead tee shirt, be prepared to be doused in Differential Friction Modifier.

That was the only stain that did not come out of that collectible shirt!

                Thanks Fred!

Heat and good wrenches. It's a real pain somtimes. After I got it out I used antiseeze on the threads and haven't had any problems.

If it can be done in a hotel parking lot, it should be much easier in a garage or other semi controlled environment. It helps to be badgered by gangs of drunks just looking for a laugh.

Invest in a good flare nut wrench. If you bugger up the part, Forced-4 has new replacement EGR tubes for both styles found on early and later SVO's.

I'll volunteer as one of the gang, if it helps.

Does anyone know where I can get a manifold to turbo gasket that will last more than `10,00 miles? The ones I get are Fel Pro, they are thin sheet metal with a bead around the openimg to make it rigid. I have changed the stupid thing three times in the last 40,00 miles and it is leaking again. I'm getting tired of this plus every time I remove the oil return line I am afraid I will mess it up and cause myself more grief.

As far as all your guyses suggestions of how to remove the nuts on the turbo flange, the first time I removed mine a suggestion I got was to replace the studs with stainless and the nuts with brass. I have not had a problem with them since.

That sounds feasible, I will try it next time.

                              Thanks,

bringing this back because i finally got the turbo out. While doing so i broke some things and found out that other things are broken. i want to know the best places to get the replacements. the list is as follows:
                                -EGR tube
-coolant piping that goes to the top of the turbo
-the bracket that is on the bottem of the turbo
i think those are all the parts. any suggestions would be great
