  • what to look for in swaping mainifolds?

Ok I've had enough of my broken down cracked mainifold, its killing me to drive it now days. I got a ported E6 to replace the old cracked E3 and was wondering what I need to look for to do it. Also is there any tips to help do it, a friend told me to be careful of the Oil line(s) they would be hard to replace if broken etc.

    Thanks

    hints

I have done this alot lately. I found that a MAP torch, PB blaster, impact gun, Impact swivels, and some luck and the manifold comes out. Plan on replacing your feed line. the return line usually is not that bad to get out. Soak everything for a day or 2 in PB blaster before even trying to get it off. especially if the car has never been apart before.

    good luck

It's not a hard job though, if everything comes apart smoothly, it's about an hour to get it out, hour to get it back in.

Just tackle it and enjoy yourself.

Bet you'll be suprised how heavy the turbo/manifold is as a unit.

Sounds pretty good. I'm guessing that PB blast is some kind of oil you put on the nuts and bolts? Now on this feed line which line is that one? Is it the one that wraps around back of the motor and bolts up to the drives side of the block? Where can I get one also and do you have a part number for it? Also anyone got the gasket part numbers I would need, I don't want to be ready to go with the wrong gasket in the middle of the night lol

As for how much the turbo/mainifold weighs as a unit I would guess 80-100lbs That E6 I got weighs proubly 20lbs its self.

        Thanks for your imputs

          lines

Call brian at motion dynamics. he has it all in stock. I say you will probably need to replace the line mainly because the stock line is attached to the manifold with a tab and most times when you try to unbolt it the nut turns with the stud and kink city.

Yes PB blaster is a oil. (kicks A$$) It is not that hard but it is a little time consuming.

          lol

Well I'm glad I'm in no hurry I wonder if I should just park the car until this summer so I will have more time to work on it. I mean it I'm going to pull the exhaust mainifold and I need to swap some injectors also. This maybe a good time to install a ported head I got also Its turning into a very big Domino effect lol

                Naww, you know the drill.

Buy an SVO. Then stucco the house.

Buy a spare SVO. Then copper repipe the house.

Buy another SVO(just in case). Then buy new furniture.

Make sure not to miss wedding anniverseries, birthdays or valentines day, and you will be safe, loved and forgiven. Along the way, remind her that it's legal and still cheaper than crack.

After all that, buying a few spare parts cars will only make sense, even to your wife.

To late lol . All my stuff like my 88' TC parts car, pro 5.0 shifter, ported head, and E6 was bought a while back when I was going to drop a 2.3T in my 93' LX coupe. When I saw this SVO for sale I was like that is what I should do its already running I also got my eye on a 84' SVO that once I get this one running right I may ... fix up if it so how finds its way to my house Now my wife is looking at me in a very weird funny way " like your days are numbered " lol Heck I still need to buy : Upgrade to the newer intakes (ported/gutted), FPR, gauges, fuel pump, muffler and so on

All I wanted was 230 rwhp to open road race in, but you know how that goes

The Turbo and Manifold together weigh maybe 30lbs at the most. There is a braided stainless steel line available from Motion Dynamics for $50. It won"t kink and is easier to install. I just completed the swap you are talking about. I'd love to see it done in 2 hours by the average backyard mechanic. It took me about 3hrs off and 1 1/2 back on. The biggest challenge was getting the EGR tube disconnected from the manifold. It finally took a torch and a pair of vice grips. All in all it wasn't too bad and it's doesn't really require much mechanically ability, just some decent tools, PB blaster and a propane torch.

I found PB Blaster at Wal-Mart in the automotive section. I couldn't beleive my eyes. I was always scoring cans of it off the job here and there. Great stuff!

Just one big thing to add --

when you take it all apart, pay special attention to how the Y bracket bolts to the block and the turbo, and make SURE you get it back in there --- the turbo needs the support.
