On a slightly different note, I got my newly aquired 96 Cobra wheels on my car and below is a pic.

The tires are Yoko A520's in the 245/45ZR17 size. They are a very tight squeez up front, but haven't rubbed yet. I did have to change the bolt that holds the bumber cover extension from a standard hex head to a lower profile button style hex head and thinner washer. While the tire did not contact the bolt head in the driveway it was too close for comfort.

        Front-wheel drive wheels?

Following Bud's advice (look for Probe applications), I found some nice-looking wheels from Volt Racing. They claim to fit a Probe, they are 17 by 7.5 (perfect), and only around $700 for four wheels. Great, I say! I read more and discover that they claim to be for front-wheel drive cars only.

Was the Probe front-wheel drive? Will front-wheel drive wheels be a problem (I can guess at some distinctions but it would just be guessing)...

        Thanks!

The front end has 98 LX spindles and hubs with cobra rotors and Bullitt calipers. You also must use the 98 inner and outer tie rod ends. One thing you must choose is eather reem the the new spindles to fit the SVO ball joint or install 98 lower control arms, I choose to reem the spindles. The only 95 Cobra R wheel that will fit under the SVO fenders is the M-179 for the front and rear. I have tried both the 179 and the R-58 and the R-58 just won't fit. The tires I am running are BFGoodrich G-Force KDW 245-45 in front and 255-45 out back. The car has also been lowered with Ford Motorsport C springs. I have no problems in the back with scrubbing, but minor in the front. This little problem is being worked out with the addition of spring bushings between the front control arms and C-spring. If I can answer any questions feel free to E-mail me @ christopher.j.hadden@delta-air.com Good luck and happy hunting for your wheels and tires..CJH
I have a set of 179 and R58's. I was under the impression it would work.

Anyone else tried this? I was hoping the R58 would work on the front with 245s.

              Just posting some insight.

I don't own an SVO, but I researched wheel options HEAVILY for my T-bird. I've converted to the 4.50x5 bolt pattern from the MN12 T-bird 4.25x5.

Many of you are posting wheel sizes and names that DO NOT match. You've made this thread pretty confusing.

The main point gets across. Due to the rear axles many of the Ford Mustang wheels in 17x8 and 17x9 sizes will require fender modifications, suspension changes and limited tire sizes.

That being said, I would hope you post the correct sizes and the correct names of the wheels so people can follow the thread.

              There were:

              93 Cobra R's(94-95 Tribars) 17x8
95 Cobra R's(5 spoke offered in two different backspacings from multiple suppliers including Ford) 17x9
              96-98 SVT Cobra wheels(3 styles in 17x8 with 30mm offset) 17x8
              99-01 SVT Cobra wheels(also 2002 GT 17x8 wheels) 17x8
              2000 Cobra R 18x9.5
2003/2004 Mach 1 (same sizing as 96-98 Cobra wheels I believe)
              2003/2004 SVT Cobra 17x9
              (probably missing a few)

That's the majority of the 17" wheels listed in this thread. Cobra R's were offered in THREE syles. 1) 94/95 tribar 17x8's. 2) 17x9 5 spoke 3) 18x9.5 thinner five spoke. All other wheels would be Cobra wheels....not Cobra R wheels.

I'm not trying to be a smarty, just trying to offer some help and wrap up a lot of this thread

                Just an FYI:

Maximum Motorsports has Konig Villans in 17X8 with a 6" backspace for coil-over clearance, would probably fit SVO's easier than Cobra R's.

Any Konig Villan users out there?

The Konig's that I got from MM are 17x9 I don't think they have 8" . I had to do a full Fox/SN95 conversion to get them to fit.

                    98 cobra wheels

A local guy is selling a set of 98 cobra wheels (ford ones, not aftermarket) (17 x 8''). They have 255 40 17 Yokohama Z rated tires on them with about 70% tread. He's asking 600. Would these fit? I tried looking through all these posts, but it appears there are several different answers. Is this a fair price? I figure if they will fit I will try to talk him down to 450 or 500 (assuming that's a fair price - still more than I should probably spend...). Thanks for the help - Mark
                    I'm 21 and I've owned 3 SVO's... Yeah I like 'em.

                    • They will most likely have rubbing issues as 245's require rear fender rolling with '96 Cobra 17x8 wheels. 255's may also require front fender rolling as well and will probably rub your nose cone extension in the front fender well.

If they guy is local, ask if you can trial fit them on the car and move the car around on the ground to check clearances with the wheels at full lock (check them at BOTH right and left full lock as the fit may differ from side to side!).

As for price $600 isn't too bad with 70% tread left, but I would try and get the price a bit lower. Look up what it would cost you for purchasing/mounting the tires new and deduct that from the total cost to see if the rim cost is what you want. For reference, my set of '96 Cobra rims minus the new tires that were on them came out to be $25/rim. Not bad in my book. Later.

                        To add a data point...

A friend put the 179/R58 combo on his 85 GT with Lincoln(SVO) axles & brakes in back and SVO front end. It worked with 275's in the back, but only of certain tire brands. He changed tires and cut the hell out of one side, so he got rid of them. Now he has 255's in the rear, 245's in the front, and likes it much better.

I forgot to ask him if he did some massaging with a hammer, but I don't think he did much if any.

There was also a "modern" fox in a Mustang rag recently that had SVO axles and brakes with Cobra R's and 275's in the rear with stock looking bodywork, so it can be done.

All 17x8 Mustang (OEM) wheels are the same offset so if one style fits, they all will fit (or not).

I tried a set of 98 Cobra wheels (17x8) from Ford on Flamejob, and they would not fit the front hub. The wheels would need to be machined to fit. Someone at the reunion was running them, but they were machined and the center caps stuck out a hair and looked to be custom fit. Hope this helps.
