A SVOCA Exclusive Review of
The Mustang Triathlon
from MM & FF November 1999

The SVOCA would like to congratulate member Ken Schultz for a great showing with his SVO! I am sure that because of Ken's efforts, we (the SVO community) will get some well deserved recognition.

The following is a review of the article written by Evan J. Smith. While I have read the article and included many of the numbers, This is no way a substitute for the whole article as published in MM & FF! The article is about 7 ½ pages and goes into more detail than what space and copyright laws will allow me to do. The SVOCA would like to thank MM & FF for the information contained in this review. The Triathlon Event was held at Englishtown Dragstrip on July 13th., 1999, sponsored by Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords. SVOCA board member Paul Becker attended and gave us some initial results and pictures prior to the publication of the official results.

The purpose was to see how various Fox bodied cars performed  in three events, drag racing, autocross and the skidpad. It is common to see mustangs modified to go in a straight line or for the twisties. In an effort to get a true comparison the same driver would evaluate all the participants. It seems that Evan was the lucky person chosen for this fun task. Hey Vinnie, how can some of us apply for the drivers position?

It seems that Evan needed a little practice to get Ken's SVO to launch without bogging the car or just shred the tires. Vinnie suggested that Evan launch at 4500 which seemed to work and a clean pass was recorded at 12.91 at 109 mph, without nitrous. On the third and final run a pass of 12.002 at 116 mph was recorded with nitrous.

Autocross

Car Best Lap 2nd Best 3rd Best
LSC 25.85 26.06 26.13
PWT 24.98 25.13 25.28

SVO 24.80 25.00 25.27
1994 Cobra 25.06 25.24 25.27

Evan said that the SVO had the best balance of all the cars tested. Turn in was quick. Stopping was easy thanks to the SVO's big brakes.

LSC .78g/.82g .88g/.91g

SVO .82g/.84g .84g/.88g

Evan closed his section on Ken's SVO with the following, "While it wasn't my personal favorite, the SVO was unique and very powerful. It had more horsepower than expected and nice handling as well. Light weight, peaky power and good grip make this a true winner. Keep in mind, Shultz's SVO is a street car that can be road raced or drag raced and in doing either, will grab a host of attention. We say look out for the little four."
