  • 84 Silver CP/Option Delete? (WA)

Time to start yet aonther SVO project, this is number three. In Recent years I have been stymied by an 85.5 comp prep. I know, great problem to have right? No it was not. But finally I decided to give up the ghost. Now that my garage is empty I can move onto my Silver 84 (option delete / CP) depending on who you ask. The reason that the 85.5 CP was such a drama for me was that I had a specific design in mind for my SVO resto. But after Chalky confirmed how rare the car was I was unable to modify it in any way. While struggling with what to do I came across the 84. I bought it believing that it was in no way special, and that I could do as I please. So problem solved.
My plan, money and time permitting, is to paint it Turbocoupe midnight blue, change the interior over to black leather, use red 84 GT 350 trim for the ¼ and door trim, keep the drive train and interior options stock, (It has a factory radio, probably a dealer added option after delivery, don’t know yet, will be on the look out for the build sheet). I also want to remove the bi-wing (no bitching please).
The previous owner(s) changed the headlights over to 86 aero style, and I would like to go back to the 84, but not a deal breaker. It currently has an aftermarket cat, and a 3 inch exhaust, this will be a single stainless set up with a stock twin pipe tip when it all redone.
It was not running when I bought it, the owner claimed that the battery was dead. I did not care, and had it towed home. It turned out to be a broken timing belt. I replaced it, started it, and drove it around the block (No tabs!)
At that point I removed the turbo and sent it to Charlie at evergreen. What an outstanding product that guy turns out! I ordered and sourced the parts necessary to water-cool the newly overhauled Turbo. I am in the process of installing that turbo. As part of this I bought an E6 from Chalky, along with a fender.
This has not been an easy deal, the EGR tube turned out to be frozen to the manifold. So, more parts are needed, most are on order.
While removing the manifold I broke the bracket for the intercooler because of frozen nuts.
The rear hatch was rusted to hell, so I removed it and bought another hatch, which means I am looking for a spoiler for an 84/85. I have a line on one in Seattle; hope to pick it up on Saturday.
If anyone cares I will continue to update this. I want to post pics and seek advice (as long as it is not to tell me that I am committing a sin).

Tom, follow this link, the car belongs to mokancraig and looks real sharp.

Also, if you want to keep the SVO seats, Paul at SVPU can get TMI to custom make seat covers in the black leather you want.

I'll be in Arlington over the weekend so if you want to catch up lemme know.

Yea, I've seen it, It's fustrating to have a plan and see parts of it appear eslwhere. It is one of the reasons that the years wasted on the 85.5 are regretful. But it's the plan I've had for years, and if I can I want to follow thru.

      Later Man.

        "because of frozen nuts"
The reason I haven't been in the garage much this winter. LOL
Seriously doesn't sound like you're dealing with anything the rest of haven't fealt with.
Rust on 20+ year old cars makes any job tougher.
The up-side is that once you've had every bolt removed once, it's easier to do down the road if needed.
PB Blaster and a MAPP torch are your friends.
If it ain't broke... Give me some time!

          Turbo, E6 Manifold installed

Update- Installed newly overhauled turbo, an E6 manifold, New EGR tube, and started it up. It ran fine, there was some smoke at first, but it had been dead for abut 5 months so I was not too worried. The manifold and turbo smoked for a while burning off coatings, and antisieze compound. I used a gasket between the manifold and the head just in case, so i am a little concerned about exhaust leaks, but it started to rain so i had to shut it down and drive it back in the barn. (due to the hatch being removed) My next move is to get the replacement hatch prep’d and installed with the standard spoiler painted to look like an SVO spoiler (bi-wing delete).
Having second thoughts about painting the car blue, might stay silver.

I purchased the parts to add water cooling to the turbo, but decided to wait on that until I was sure that the motor is good.

When I last ran it it was weak and making a noise, that was with a dead turbo and a cracked E3 manifold, and in need of a timing set. I set it near the mark when I replaced the timing belt in the fall, but have not run the car properly yet. Once I get the timing set, the hatch installed it will get a proper test drive. Hopefully the weakness in it will have been addressed by the fixes already done.

Tom, nice to hear it's workin' out. Silver is a nice colour on the 84's.

              Poop!!!

Installed New hatch yesterday and found that the body/frame is bent/twisted. As a result of the hatch rig process i figured out that the *** is sagging, and warped to the left, and that the nose is bent down with the floor pans warped upwards. It's a frackin' Mess. Scott thinks a frame shop can help.... I sure hope so...........

Well that is some strange damage. Do you know if it was ever raced / on a track? It almost sounds as if it was launched or hung up in the middle? Any damage to the pinch weld seams along the underside of the rockers?

I see all kinds of dents, and warps, but no pinch weld seam seperation. Tomorrow it goes to the frame shop.

                        Frame Shop

Here are a couple of pics of the car at the frame shop. The measurements are mostly good, the shop is going to do a pull on one side tomorrow, will know more then.

                          Fixed!

I just left the frame shop, "Special Interest Autobody" in Everett WA. Man am I a happy camper. The fender well is fixed, the shock tower (rear) is fixed, the roof dent is gone. The hatch fits like a glove. I Could not be more impressed. With towing two ways it was only 726 bucks. I can move forward. Great job by Sean, the frame tech. Pics to follow.
