Nice, are you going to loan that to me? I have a 99 IRS now.

If it doesn't break into a thousand pieces, then yes. I have a jack pad bolted into the middle of the 2x12 so it can't fall off the jack. After IRS is bolted in, lower jack and dolly will follow. there's nothing holding it to the IRS but the locating pins (1/2 bolts)

Chris, you should drive south for a Saturday and help me drop it in. I need to drop the tank, reroute the fuel lines and swap the tranny this coming weekend prior to IRS install. Prolly do it the weekend following.

          Me too.

Just finished an 03 irs in the 84 svo. Feels much better than the old eibach springs and panhard bar. As a daily driver is is heaven. smooth. I did cut 3/4 of the spring coil off to get the ride height to my liking. Will do correct springs later on.
Running a set of 05 gt bullet wheels and 17/40/245 nitto. fit perfect.
moved the fuel line and installed new brake lines to the back.
          I like it!
On my first drive i was forced off the road a bit in a curve and it got a little sideways. recovered with no problems and enjoyed the ride home.
          I still like it.
I find it an upgrade for a dd.
Time to clean up the engine bay!

Not sure what all has been modded on mine yet, still going over the details, but here's a shot of the '99 IRS on my 84, and no fitment issues with the stock wheels.

for the stock SVO wheels to fit without rubbing, you'll have to grind just a bit off the back edge of the tie-rod end.

                Kuel...

Good to know. Thanks for the heads up. I'll grind tomorrow night while it's out of the car. I'll run my ol 'Paul Becker Special' Probe GT wheels and report on how they fit. They're a few mm offset different than stock but still 16". I haven't found anything I like more than them yet. When I grow up, I'll get some 20" spinners in there.

Eric, what is the proper name of the new brake line fitting used by Ford (you mentioned it to me at the reunion). I still need to pick up the adapter to connect to the double flair.

ummmm --- not sure you need anything from ford, unless you don't have the flex brake lines themselves. That's what I had to get.

as for brake lines, you'll have to make them, with a few pieces of 3/16?, and a T-fitting. tubing, you can buy from any auto-parts store, and I think I got the T from advance.
Someone double check me on that line size, I can't remember for sure.

                    Yes it is 3/16 line
you need to get a connector to the original location on the body and put in a T
then bend some hard lines to the IRS flex line locations and get 3/16 double flair to 10 mm bubble adaptors at each end where the flex lines are

                      I heart my IRS.
It's probably been mentioned before, but its not a perfect system. it was designed to install into a chassis that is now 30+ years old. corners had to be cut, and compromises made.
but for the street, the "mustang conga" has been eliminated, the unsprung weight has decreased, and you get adjustable camber and toe!

I followed http://www.mouthbreather.net/IRSSWAP.HTML about 7 years ago, and it took 14 hours on my own. thats from driving it in to driving it out. new exhaust, brake lines, etc. that included lunch and a trip or 2 to the parts store for brake lines.

                        Since it hasn't been asked...

What is a decent price for a used IRS?

Is there any preventitive maintenance besides a fluid change that should be done prior to install?

Is the 03 better somehow? Any design changes that make a difference?

I'm just using this as an example. These folks are supposed to be under new management. I think they're still charging the old over-inflated prices though? This is a whole lot more than I would want or expect to spend.

Decent price:: WHO KNOWS --- generally see them going on ebay 850-1200
I got one that was slightly broke, but I have a lot less $$$ in mine than that.

PM - YES, if it has more than a few miles on it (maybe even if it's new) replace the front bushings before you put it in. I like the poly ones...

YES, the 03 has an extra brace that was added across the front, that helped reduce wheel hop. It can be added to the other years as well.

                            IRS Cost...

I paid $1000 delivered from a private seller. Conway freight from CA to CO. No exhaust, everything else incl EBrake cables. I was given the correct "GT" pinion flange but it had to be installed. The Cobra flange won't fit our driveshaft. I was dumb enough to remove the old flange and didn't measure the preload on the axles so I hauled it all over to the local diff guy to put in another crush sleeve and set it up. If you understand diffs better than I do, you can do it yourself.

I considered this a fair market price based on ebay sales. I don't have any good connections, like some, to 'acquire' such toys at significantly lower prices.

I paid under $200 for my unit, but it is like Eric's; slightly broke and missing some parts. I am in the process of rounding up the parts I need and would like to install the rear in 2009.

Instead of swapping the pinion flange, has anyone swapped out the rear flange on the motorsport aluminum driveshaft?

As I understand it the 99 has 28 spline axles and 3.73 gears, the 01-02 has 3.27 gears and 31 spline axles, and the 03-04 has 3.55 gears and 31 spline axles. Did I get that correct?

Mike, I don't have time in the next two weekends to help out. Do you have air tools and a heated garage?

                              Thanks,
                              Chris

yup. I'm too old to do that outside in the Colorado winter. I even have a fridge in the garage.
