  • not trying to beat a dead horse, but i am trying to make sense of this. i am looking at a set of aftermarket wheels 17x7 with a 40mm offset for a probe gt application. not talking about tire size/width... the wheel should sit close to where the stock wheel does??? thanks, troy

I have looked for a set of wheels off a probe to use on the svo from time to time. They cost more than I wanted to pay for them.
Where is the link that you saw those and how much?
Time to clean up the engine bay!

      • Im using 17" probe applications on my stock 84. Pretty good fit however the hubs had to be machined and the fronts rub a little when turning in reverse. Not bad overall. The biggest downer is you cant use the front hub caps that come with most wheels. I used chromed front hub dust caps and they look okay.

I have to agree with Bud though, the 17" wheels on our cars kinda look a little out of place and do slightly change the geometry even if you use the +1 therory. Im sticking with 16" on my other 84 to try and make it a little more user freindly.

The biggest trick is getting the perfect offset, Ive yet to get that just right.

What do you do with the extra lug per wheel?

The fender lips are rolled, and the tires are 235/45/17 in the front, and 245/45/17 in the rear. I HAVE found that tire brand has a great deal to do with fitment, my old Comp TAs never rubbed, but the Sumitomos at the same size rub a little.
I have the same combo with Kumho 711 235/45/17 on front and rear with no rub at all. Mine is lowered with motorsport C springs

                  • Are you sure you don't have 94-97 Cobra wheels?

                    • Has anyone tried the 16" wheels that come on the 05 V6 mustang? They're the ones with the knock off center caps and the kind of split 5 spoke design.
                      I'm 21 and I've owned 3 SVO's... Yeah I like 'em.

If these are the ones you are talking about, http://www.svoca.com/forum/attachmen...s=&postid=3754
they are 94-97 base GT 16x7.5 wheels. Sometimes refered to as "Waffle wheels" though I do not see it.

                            • Yep those are what I have and I have to say they went right on although they came with 225 55 16 and the rear tires rub when I hit a bump. No other probs though they went right on.

                              • Bud, I'm directing this post to you mostly since I think you created this link and have been moderating it. There are so many posts now with good and not so good attempts that a fellow get's bogged down trying to sort through it.

Could you or anyone please post an actual list of the 16" & 17" rims that are known to fit an SVO? I think it's important that it be compiled into three categories:
                                1. Looks cool but might require folding the rear wheel well lip
                                2. Same as #1 but fits with correct backspacing (so they won't change geometry by extending centerline scrub radius).
                                3. Will require machining or changing suspension.

Here are the only two that I know for sure can be added to #2.
Saleen, mid '80s lace style with 16x8 rear & 16x7.5 front
                                Mitsubishi 2000GT 16 x 8
Probe 16" (that you listed before)

I'm sure there are many more but like I said, it's very tough to pick them out of this huge thread. This effort would save many SVO owners countless hours of confusion.
